This thesis purports to examine a possible educational methodology that helps teenagers to develop a sense of self, which leads them to self-fulfillment in their future by evoking virtue of ‘self-reliance’ which 19th-century American Transcendentalist philosophers advocated. It is generally recognized that Korean teenagers, compared with those in the Western society, fall behind in the development of selfhood and psychological autonomy in their adolescence. With this problematic phenomenon in mind, this study aims to propose a possibility to instruct Korean teenage students on the spirit of self-reliance, thus encouraging them to attain self-realization in their future life. “Do not speak (answer) outside yourself” becomes the motto of Transcendentalism. Transcendentalist philosophers value the importance of individual soul and its preciousness. Therefore, ‘self-reliance’ becomes the core concept of Transcendentalism. The concept of self-reliance is also essential for ‘self initiative learning system’ on which the educational theories and practice focus intensively these days. Through educational practice which attends to the importance of developing self-esteem, we can help teenagers enlarge their love of, and interest in, others and the world around them as well as responsibility for their own lives. People can love others only when they love themselves properly. As such, this thesis examines the role of school for teenagers' self-actualization and the transcendentalist concept of self-reliance that can be applied to the life of korean teenagers today. The second chapter examines the undeveloped state of teenagers' sense of self. Such lack of selfhood results from the fact that teenagers unconditionally conform to social and traditional values without reflecting on those values for themselves. They have anxiety about self-contradiction in the course of the development of their self-consciousness. Consequently, they tend to have their consciousness molded into the fixed frame of social values. To overcome these problems, the transcendental sense of self that emphasizes ‘self-reliance’ is introduced. The third chapter discusses the elements of self-reliance as explored in Emerson's Nature: non-conformity, inconsistency and creativeness. Those virtues of self-reliance are required especially for teenagers, for they are in the course of developing their character. In other words, they need to acquire self-reliant attitude in their adolescence so that they can grow up into an independent and responsible human being in the future. Unfortunately, however, the school system in Korea tends to neglect such values as self-esteem and creativity of students. The fourth chapter discusses Henry David Thoreau's thoughts on self-reliance, highlighting his belief in such virtues as ‘self-awareness’ ‘self-realization’, and ‘challenge’. This study claims that the virtues which Thoreau emphasizes and practices in his Walden and Civil Disobedience be the most valuable moral conditions that teenagers must accomplish. Thoreau believes that even though the road of one's life is crooked, if he has affection and respect for the road, he must go through it. Thoreau's concept of self-reliance can help teenagers who are prone to be upset about their unreliable future to elevate their self-confidence during their adolescence. The final chapter illuminates the fact that the goal of formal education is to help students achieve this self-reliance. To support my argument, I take an example from ‘Knowledge is Power Program’, a school revival movement directed by passionate teachers in urban areas of the U.S.A. The result of the ‘Knowledge is Power Program’ is a good model showing a possibility of school education that encourages students to build up self-reliance or self-esteem as well as to show improvements in their school work. In conclusion, teenagers can discover their potential, vision, and value of life through the concept of self-reliance and through the attained self-confidence, with which they can live their life actively. They can achieve self-growth and self-actualization on condition that they can set up their life goal with self-reliance and pursuit it consistently. Finally, this thesis emphasizes the importance and role of school education which can help teenage students establish self-reliance.
