The Amitabul painting of the Buddha at the Wolrisa Temple was painted in March 1897 Kumhodang Yark Hyo in the later half of the Joseon Dynasty. Unfortunately a quarter of the painting was vandalized making it unrecognizable. Due to this event, the missing portion of the painting was restored through assumptions deviated from other painting by the same artist. Also by using 3 types of scientific analysis instruments the material used for the original painting was studied. By doing so, the replication was able to take place with the closest type of material to the original painting was possible. By using the XRF and XRD gypsum and lead sulfate was found in the color white. It appears that the gypsum, which had the larger pigments, was painted first followed by a secondary layer by lead sulfate. Yellow was created by using lead and quartz. This color is assumed to have not been a natural color but created with chemical pigments. Red was created from cinnabar, brown from hematite, and green from atacamite, showing that natural minerals were used for the colors. Blue was estimated to have been created by using ultramarine methods prior to the 19th century. Looking into 6 different types of pigment and background samples through a microscope, the outer layer pigments show to be composed of minerals. These pigments began to lose its adhesive strength causing peeling and scaling. Deep color pigment methods were used for the painting. After observations on the base painting, plain fabrics consisting of cotton and wool was found in thick overlaps. After careful studies through an SEM, there were areas where the wool was loose or the base painting was partially missing there was no sign of disconnection in the fabric itself or extreme tears in the film. Afterwards 3 samples were taken from each layer of lining. The first lining showed the least damage among the rest and the elements within the fabric was the highest quality in comparison to the end and middle lining. SEM observations also showed that the first lining was fit with vertical and horizontal layers. The gaps between the fabric was to a minimum and used the highest quality of smoothened fabric. On the other hand, the last lining showed partial areas of openings thus having gaps in the fabric with adulterated elements. The quality of the last lining was low in contrast to the other lining. Damage was done to this layer much more extensively than the other layers due to its position on the outer area. With this in mind, the preassumption of the original picture, prior to the restoration, took place in reference to similar the paintings of Kumhodang Yark Hyo from the same era. The Amitabul at Beopjusa Temple was done using the same patterns and even the specific coloring methods and was used as a sample model for the replica of the painting, waiting to be restored. By doing so the Kumhodang Yark Hyo of the Amitabul at Wolrisa Temple was defined by studying the top of the principle icon it was learned that 4 apprentices including Anan and Kaseop helped. In addition, the painting's missing diameter was also estimated. This paper focused on the scientific analysis of the painting's methods and pigments in addition to an artistic approach in order to create a replica model of a restored version of the damaged Buddha painting. From now on restoration will take place with its focus beyond the presentation of the painting. The ingredients and methods are extremely important areas of the restoration process. Thus, using an artistic approach of the replica's production in collaboration with an approach using restoration science, the project must continue to advance ahead towards the final product.
