Recently, rapid development of construction technology causes to design and construct the long-span bridges with ultimately optimal cross section and light-weight materials. Since the long-span bridges have a small cross section vs self-weight, it is seems to have lower structural characteristics than those of existing bridges. In the case of lower strength of bridge, a variety of the structural instability can be happened in the construction steps, and these problems can make the construction of bridges difficult.
Therefore this study brings to focus on analyzing the differences and the causes between theoretical and experimental values of gap or discontinuity at free ends of cantilever in construction step, and proposing the basic data for design of realistic prestressed concrete bridges by FCM.
For these purpose, 20 construction steps are selected as analysis model, and the in-site measurement of the gaps as typical structural property are made in each construction step. Since most of structural analyses in construction step are executed assuming that the engineering properties of bridge are similar to those in the other site, discrepancy or difference between the theoretical and monitoring values of gap can be found positively in free-end of cantilever by FCM. In-site measured-gaps makes an analysis of the ranges and the cause of difference compared with theoretical gaps not considering to in-site condition.
As the analysis results, the maximum difference of theoretical and measured gaps is 27mm in interior span, 22mm in exterior span, and 65mm in the next exterior span. Prestressing the tendon at bottom slab after the complete cantilever construction, longitudinal elevation is suitable to move comfortably. However, the difference between the theoretical and measured gaps occurs because of applying the inadequate in-site condition or unsuitable deduction of final longitudinal elevation for moving train.
In-site measured results from intial to complete construction step in this study are used to analyze and design the PSC bridge by FCM. These data will not only be basic material in future design of PSC bridge by FCM, but also be control parameters of gap and camber as reference.
