This research paper will focus on novels by Lee, Cheong-jun, classified as a homecoming genre. The purpose of the paper is to examine how the characters overcome reality through exploration of their hometown, their self-images and hometown experience. In Chapter II of the body : The first clause of 'Exploration of the hometown and self-image' analyzes what it means to have a hometown, and how self-images can be translated to 'the womb of one's existence.' The three characters from 「A bird and a Tree」, the elder brother who left the hometown and the deceased mayor who dreamt of building his home in his motherland can be compared to the entity of Bidsae (Rain-bird) itself. Hometown becomes a tree and accept the wanderer as its Bidsae (Rain-bird) like the womb of its existence. 「The Cruel City」 shows how a man who has lived most of his life in prison attempts to reconcile with the city, but fails and leaves to find his hometown portrayed as a paradise. When the man's attempt to reconcile with the city fails, he heads south with a bird with broken wings. This journey south is not only a journey to the womb of his existence, his hometown, but also the journey to his salvation. In 「Reminiscing the Summer」, the protagonist reflects upon himself for having an unknown conflict with his own motherland. He finally realizes that his homeland is a place where he can share the sorrow of life and death, as the womb of his identity, and finds his self-identity. In 「Beach Arirang」, the main meaning of the homeland is comparable to the mother's endless wait. The second clause analyzes the novels from the point of view of 'binomial antagonistic relationship network', which is characteristic of Lee Cheong-jun's novels. 「Practicing Homecoming」 shows the recovery stages of a person who is suffering from conflict with the outer world. In 「The Cruel City」, the city, the prison and the prisoner's house are in antagonistic relationship with the prisoner's suburban hometown. In the end, the man's hometown becomes a place of reconciliation, salvation and a Utopia, away from the prison and the prisoner's home. In 「A bird and a Tree」, the aspect of the city that is portrayed as a contrary to the motherland is revealed. In the later part of the story, the antagonistic relationship between speech and voice show how vain words are sublimated to a voice to reach a higher order and harmony. The protagonist from 「Reminiscing the Summer」shows his conflict with the outer world. The third clause views the novels with the perspective of 'the shame of the original sin.' 「The Snowy Road」 describes the awareness of the original sin towards one's hometown. In 「The Living Swamp」, the protagonist has no choice but to go back to his hometown. However, the thing that the protagonist has sought his hometown again shames him, and this shame is comparable to the world of swamps. In 「Reminiscing the Summer」, the elderly man feels shameful and guilty about having to call the protagonist back to the hometown due to the youngest sister's death. In the end, the elderly man blames everything on his own fate. This kind of self-sacrificial attitude is well portrayed in 「So What If the Birds Cry」. In Chapter III of the body : The first clause deals with 'overcoming of the reality through motherland experience' and is discussed from the point of view of 'leaving and returning.' In 「Practicing Homecoming」, the protagonist rediscovers himself through practicing homecoming. Furthermore, he finds his will to live and leaves for Seoul where he has lived most of his life. The narrative structure of 「The Living Swamp」 describes how the protagonist initially has a negative perspective on his hometown and people living in it due to his upbringing in the city. However, after a car accident on his way out of his hometown, he realizes his inner self and rediscovers a new perspective on his hometown and the neighbors. In 「Beach Arirang」, the protagonist finds himself at peace at his hometown after all the characters who regret the fact that they have left their hometown have passed away. Through the narration of the story, the true meaning of a hometown, the origin of the character's essential self, and the meaning of homecoming can be comprehended. In the second clause, the stories are analyzed from the point of view of 'sublimation of regret through sound.' The sequel, 『Namdo People』, well represents the relationship between regret and sound, in other words, repression and art, in a tragic environment. In 「Wanderer from Sun-Hak-Dong」, sound allows for the feeling of sublimation for her elderly brother as well as the woman and helps the man from the tavern see a flying crane. In 「A bird and a Tree」, a key of Namdo sound is described more concretely. In the last story of 『Namdo People』, 「Speech Reborn」, Kim Suk-ho tells Ji-wook a story of a man who wanders around in Namdo, seeking for sound. In this conversation between Suk-ho and Ji-wook, the main cause why people run away from their own hometowns negative outlook on the world and their return to their motherland are narrated in details. In 「Beach Arirang」, the song that the mother, Keum-san-daek, recites symbolizes the grudge that one has against the world. In 「Reminiscing the Summer」, the motherland experience that the protagonist goes through after returning back to his hometown allows him, who at the time was suffering from the loss of hometown, to understand it as a place where he could discover a greater love and freedom. He finally realizes his wrong and sees the recovery of speech as a new language. This realization is a Namdo sound that drowns his regret as well as the sublimates the regret, allowing the protagonist to seek the real meaning and value of his motherland. In the third clause, the stories are observed with an emphasis on the theme, 'salvation through forgiveness and reconciliation.' In 「The Living Swamp」, the protagonist gets caught in a broken bus in the middle of the dawn while he is escaping from his motherland. During this accident, he gains a new perspective of the people from his motherland and finally forgives and reconciles with his mother and his homeland. Through this forgiveness and reconciliation, the protagonist finds inner peace. In 「Wanderer from Sun-hak-dong」, a brother who has spent all of his life wandering around Namdo and his blind step sister accept their cruel pasts through sound. Through forgiveness and reconciliation with their pasts, they finally gain peace of mind. In 「The Speech Reborn」, the wanderers journey to Namdo looking for the 'sound,' Cho-eui monk's 'cham da do,' and the combing of the woman coincide with 'body language' rather than with sound. This coincidence represents forgiveness and reconciliation of the segregation between speech and life, and reveals that the protagonist has finally come to his salvation.
