The longitudinal performance of the 4WD vehicles is better than that of the 2WD vehicles since 4WD vehicle can control both the front and rear wheel torques, For this reason, the 4WD system, which was mainly adopted in SUV and off-road vehicles, is now growing in demand for the passenger vehicles as well. Despite its advantages, the 4WD system with the fixed torque distribution ratio between the front and rear wheels does not show satisfactory cornering performance when the vehicle is accelerated. It is because, when cornering, the optimal torque distribution ratio of the four wheels must change with the turning radius and the road friction coefficient. To solve the above problem, significant research efforts are being made in the automotive industries by studying power distribution devices which can distribute front and rear wheel torques in an optimal way with an electronic control. The transfer case, which is a device that can distribute engine output torque over the front and rear wheels, is a core component of the 4WD system. The cornering performance of the 4WD vehicle can be improved by adjusting the front and rear wheel torques by means of transfer case. Without proper torque distribution in accordance with the driving conditions, however, the wheels can still slip excessively and the lateral driving performance can deteriorate. The objective of this study is to establish a mathematical model of the mechanical 4WD system containing the transfer case, and to develop a control algorithm that can improve traction, stability and handling performance of the 4WD vehicles under various driving conditions. To this end, the algorithm judges the driving condition based upon the driver input signals, the vehicle motion signals, and estimation of the road friction. To validate the designed algorithm, simulation was performed under various driving conditions to show longitudinal acceleration and gradient performance, lateral cornering and lane change performance, and its results are given and analyzed in this paper.
