The choir is one of the major music activities for the 4th, 5th and 6th graders in the elementary school. If children are good in unison, they can also sing well in harmony. These factors help create a pleasant learning environment. Participating in a choral activity, children can experience the phenomena of music, express their feelings, form musical expressions, and create internal musical images, ultimately, enhancing the value of their lives. This study purposed to find desirable directions of the music class so that students, the main actors of learning, could have various expression activities voluntarily out of their heart and feel and experience the beauty of music in the true sense, rather than learning music in a passive attitude by the teacher’s instruction. This study was conducted as follows. First, among many important and essential elements of expressions, found in the elementary school songs, were selected and demonstrated. Second, the general concepts of expression terms, used in the elementary music and related to tempo, dynamics, interpretation, etc. were investigated. Teaching plan using the concepts was discussed as well. Third, the contents of learning were selected from the elements of musical motif expression. The textbooks were analyzed and the music to be sung by the children was selected for the advanced learning concepts of musical motif expression terms contained in the words and signs related to tempo, dynamics and interpretation. Fourth, the general expression principles of singing, tempo, dynamics and articulation were studied using actual music, and a teaching learning plan was then designed, which included the establishment of the musical motif expression concepts of thematic music, the presentation of scenes associated with the concepts, finding words associated with expressive terms in thematic music, questioning the musical uses of expressive terms, teaching the concepts of thematic music, and refining the concepts. To learn the expressive signs of thematic music, for instance, ‘forte’ and ‘piano,’ students need to feel why a specific part should be expressed as ‘forte’ or ‘piano’ rather than just learning their concepts. If the concepts are taught as simple knowledge separated from the music, they will be meaningless to the students, and they will not enjoy singing thematic music. This study will make a contribution to the correction of errors and problems in choral classes and that the methods of teaching the concepts of musical motif and expressive terms may be restructured and utilized widely in accordance with the characteristics of students and schools. Furthermore, we hope for more specific research on the principles and methods of musical motif expression.
