The purpose of this study is to help elementary schools offer a wide-range and efficient instrument classes through analyzing textbooks used in Korea, Japan and China. For this study, different musical instruments used by 3rd and 4th graders were analyzed. Styles of songs, including instrument playing and various kinds of musical instruments presented in the textbooks, were also analyzed. First, Korea, Japan and China all use recorders, and melodyhorns as melodic instruments. The three countries also shared similar types of activities. However, Korea uses melodyhorns as chordal instruments as well. Second, in Korea and Japan, xylophones are introduced as a type of instrument that can perform melodic and chordal music. How to play the xylophone is described in greater detail in Korean textbooks. Third, harmonicas are introduced only in Japanese and Chinese textbooks. However, Chinese textbooks describe in greater detail how to play the harmonica. Fourth, other melodic instruments introduced in the textbooks are organs (Korea) and guitars (in 4th grade Chinese textbooks). Fifth, rhythmical instruments are easier to play than melodious instruments and thus they are more widely used. Especially in China, most musical instruments are performed with rhythmical instruments except during special music performances. Sixth, the forms of instrumental music are similar in Korea and Japan. But China has their own style of music notation. Seventh, instrumental activities presented in the textbooks are accompanying style or ensemble. In Korea, they put emphasis on harmony and in Japan, they teach equality between singing and playing instruments. They also put emphasis on the importance of bass instruments. In China, they allow students to chose their instrument. As stated above, the three countries have different features in their music education. It must be applied the positive aspects of each country so that more efficiency in music education can be done. Hopefully additional research will be done in the future.
