Today, the distinction of genres is not clear in all fields of fine art. Accordingly, various materials are used freely regardless of genres. Therefore some avant-garde painters often produce a lot of experimental works by mixing materials randomly. This can be seen as a convenience of producing works without understanding the materials' qualities sufficiently and also without considering the safety and durability of the works. However, to improve the techniques of Korean painting and to better preserve the works, a systematic study on the technique involved in the use of materials based on the right understanding of materials' qualities is needed.
This study examines the qualities of materials in Korean traditional colored paintings, identifies their correct use and techniques by investigating the characteristics and the specific processes of gluing for their modern use.
The kinds and qualities of materials in the colored paintings (such as paints, ground materials, glues, and alum) and the techniques of using them have been examined. Bunchae(ceramic powder paints) have a higher coating power and have an advantage for painters in being able to control the quantities and qualities of glues and the densities of colors. Seokchae(stone powder paints) are also called Amchae(rock paints) and are stone powders made by grinding down colored minerals. Since Bunchae and Seokchae have more excellent color development than Bongchae(stick paints), Pyeonchae(piece paints) and dish-contained solid paints, they are more suitable for colored paintings.
Korean traditional paper and silk fabric as grounding materials have been examined. Since Jangji (Korean paper of many folded layers) is made of thick fabric layers of a paper mulberry, a lot of layers of colors can be laid on it. Accordingly, various expressive techniques can be attempted easily on it. When silk fabric as a grounding material is used with Bachae technique( the technique of making paintings appear on the front side of silk by painting on the back side of the fabric ) together they can express a particular beauty. Therefore, they were traditionally used as the materials for painting Buddha’s portrait and the king's portrait. Colored paintings using silk fabric are still produced these days.
The gluing process in colored paintings is an essential factor for sticking colored layers solidly, and it is the best fundamental work for completing colored paintings successfully. Unless gluing is done appropriately, color development in the painting becomes less intense because the finer particles of glue and paint soak into the grounding material.
Though uses of traditional materials are very complicated, they are still used in modern times. It's because they have much more excellent and peculiar qualities than newly developed materials. Accordingly, the study of developing and improving these traditional materials and its applied techniques will be a basis for the growth of Korean paintings.
