The purpose of this dissertation is to study educational and performance of dance by Gisaeng(妓生) unions or Gwonbeon(券番) who danced traditional dances in 1910s. From changes and operation in Gisaeng organizations through establishment and pursuits to curriculum of dance-related subjects and performance from 1910 to 1919 were all compared and studied.
In case of Giseong Gisaeng Gwonbeon(箕城妓生券番), they started to manage general office affairs right after the First Sino-Japanese War and also ran a Gisaeng school to teach music, dance, song and language.
In late 1910s, Gwonbeons of Chosun(朝鮮), Hanseong(漢城), Jongro(鐘路), Pyeongyang Giseong(平壤箕城), Gwangju(光州), Jinju(晉州), Daegudalseong(大邱 達成), Dongrae(東萊) etc. introduced as dance-related subjects formal palatial dance, folk dance, creative dance and foreign dance such as 'Western dance' and 'Japanese dance.'
The yearly characteristics are as follows. In the 1910-1912 period, the ‘Buddhist dance’(僧舞) was performed more than palatial dance. In the 1913-1914 period, a Gisaeng called 'Yi Hwa'(梨花) held the Buddhist dance performance 18 times, which was the most. In the 1915-1916 period, 33 types of the palatial dance were performed in Gongjin Organization for civilians. Under the Japanese ruling, creative dances such as 'Seongtaek dance dedicated to 5 years of governing'(施政五年紀念聖澤舞) and 'Congratulatory dance on railways' (鐵道祝賀舞).
During the period when Gisaeng unions were transformed to Gwonbeons, Dadong(Daejeong Gwonbeon), Gwanggyo(Hanseong Gwonbeon), Hannam(Han- namyegi Gwonbeon) and Sinchang(Gyeonghwa Gwonboen) were the major performers. Although the four Gisaeng unions turned into Gwonbeons, they still held performances as and under the name of a study group. The birth of a fair such as Gongjinhoi(共進會) became a milestone of passing traditional culture and dance to the descendents.
