This research aims to find out the effect of consumption of caffeine on electrolyte balance and temperature reaction during exercise under high temperature environment of 30~32℃. Accordingly, the outcome of this research would be significant in providing data for enhancement and maintenance of health not only to field instructors and athletes planning to use caffeine to improve their athletic ability but also to general public. The outcome of the research illustrate that although the ratio of weight change following exercise was higher for the Placebo and Caffeine administered group in comparison to the Control group, there was no significant difference between the groups(p=.997). The urine specific gravityshowed reduction of 0.1% equally throughout the Control, Placebo and Caffeine administered group without significant differences between the groups(p=.731). Although urine osmolarity was found to decrease by 2~3 folds in the Caffeine administered group in comparison to the Control and Placebo group, there were no significant differences between the 3 groups(p=.901). Urine PH was reduced most dramatically for the Caffeine administeredgroup with significant reduction between prior to and following exercise only for the Caffeine administered group(p=.033). However, there were no significant differences between the 3 groups (p=.422). There was no significant change in Hb between prior to and following exercise in all groups. Although the Hb value was the highest for the Caffeine administered group with biggest increase for the Control group, there were no significant differences between the 3 groups(p=.985). There were no significant differences in the level of Hct between prior to and following exercise for all groups and there were no material difference in change ratio between the groups. Resultantly, the Hct level did not display any significant difference between Control, Placebo and Caffeine administered groups(p=.901). Serum osmolarity also did not display any significant difference between prior to and following exercise for all the groups with the increase ratio not showing material difference and significant differences between the groups(p=.909). In the case of total protein, there was no significant difference in the level of total protein between prior to and following exercise without significant differences between the groups (p=.832). There also were no differences between the groups for urine sodium and potassium(p=.928, p=.469). That is, the level of urine electrolyte between the Control, Placebo and Caffeine administered groups did not display any significant differences. The Control group displayed the highest heart rate throughout the duration of exercise with highest rate f increase as well (142%). On the contrary, the Caffeine administered group displayed the lowest heart rate and increase ratio (125%). However, there was no significant interaction effect between the conditions of heart rate (p=.728), and no differences between the groups(p=.560). Although RPE was the lowest for the Caffeine administered group along with the lowest rate of increase (157%), there was no significant interaction effect of RPE* condition according to lapse of time(p=.078), and no significant differences between the groups(p=.318). However, in comparison to other measurement time, there were drastic differences in the RPE increase rates between the Control and Placebo, and Control and Caffeine administered groups at 30 and 35 minutes after commencement of experiment. Outcome of analysis disclosed there is significant difference between the Control and Caffeine administered group at 30 and 35 minute mark(P=.049, p=.041). In the case of changes in the body temperature, the overall local skin temperature for each part of the body was the highest for the Caffeine administered group regardless of the increase rate, and it displayed more definitive difference when compared with the Control group. Placebo group also showed higher local skin temperature, on the average, than the Control group. Increase rate of Tsk was the same overall(7.7%), and did not display significant interaction effect between the conditions of Tsk* in accordance with lapse of time. However, there was drastic increase rate for the Placebo and Caffeine administered group in comparison to Control group for the time of 10~35 minutes after commencement of experiment, and there were significant differences between the Control and Caffeine administered group at 10, 15, 25, 30 and 35 minutes. In the case of Core temperature, although there was not significant interaction effect between the conditions of Tty, the increase rate of Tty was the highest for the Caffeine administered group(10.4%). In particular, it showed prominent increase at the end of exercise in comparison to the Control and Placebo group. Increase rate as well as absolute value of MBT was the highest for Caffeine administered group. However, the result of analysis did not display any significant interaction effect between the conditions of MBT. What was particular is that although the MBT are almost the same for the Control and Placebo group following completion of exercise, there was increase in the Caffeine administered group, and there also was substantial difference between the Caffeine and Control group during the middle of exercise. Therefore, analysis of differences in the levels for each time of measurement illustrated that there are significant differences in MBT at 30 and 45 minute(p=.027, p=.047). In conclusion, it was confirmed that the consumption of caffeine prior to exercising under high temperature environment does not impart negative effect on body fluid, electrolyte balance and changes in body temperature, and lowers the cognition of fatigue from exercise. However, in the case of body temperature change, there were incidences where significant differences were observed for each measurement time period, possibility ofincrease in the body temperature arising from consumption of caffeine if duration of exercise were to sustain for more than 40 minutes cannot be excluded. Furthermore, the fact that this research was carried out in September ~ October when the ambient temperature is relatively cooler may clearly differ from thermal stress that subjects may experience under atmospheric temperature of 30~32℃, and as the aforementioned results were obtained under realistic hypothetical circumstances, the caffeine effect may only be a presumption. Therefore, it is deemed that future research needs to be carried out by more consistently controlling factors including method of experimental proceedings, time, number of subjects, nutritive conditions of the subject and daily habits of caffeine consumption of the subject.
