This study is a descriptive research for identifying the reality of stroke patients using complementary-alternative therapy and decision making- related factors. The study subjects were 101 stroke inpatients and outpatients of 2 general hospitals at Seoul. An implement of survey was modified suitable for stroke patients by applying the 7categories of alternative medical treatment from America's Office of Alternative Medicine(OMA) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH, 1992). The questionnaire was consisted of total 40 questions and data collection period was from September 15, 2008 to October 21, 2008. Data collection method was that researcher asked respondents and recorded answers with the consent of patients or main caregivers and a total of 101 questionnaires were distributed. The gathering data were analyzed through frequency and percentage on characteristics of answerer and decision maker and the reality of using alternative therapy by SPSS Win 12.0 program. Whether to use alternative therapy according to characteristics of answerer and decision maker was examined by X² and Logistic Regression Analysis was used on decision making-related factors. The results of study were as follows. 1. 55.4% of stroke patients have experienced alternative therapy and 38.6% of them were still using therapy. 2. The reason of using alternative therapy was 'Combined treatment would be likely effective.'(43.2%), the time of using alternative therapy was 'after discharged'(58.9%), and the mean using period was 2.68±1.71 months. Patients costed average 257,300±486,000 won a month and the largest answerers responded 'It is a burden to me.' (48.2%). The expectation effect before using alternative therapy was 'It would be better a bit, although disorder would not completely cure.'(47.4%), the outcome after therapy was 'Symptoms were improved.', and 78.6% of patients were satisfied. Most respondents, 92.9% had no side effect and the reason of stopping alternative therapy what they used was because 'It is expensive.' and 'Symptoms were recovered.', 33.3% and 23.8% respectively. More than half(55.4%) indicated family or relatives as a source of knowing alternative therapy. In case of having an experience to use those therapy, only 25% consulted with personal doctor and 61.9% did not discuss as the reason 'That is different matter.' 3. The most frequently used therapy were diet and nutrition(43.1%) and single way was acupuncture(13.3%), followed by Chinese medicine (12.0%), and onion juice(8.4%). Data showed that respondents used average 4 ways. 4. Whether patients used alternative therapy according to characteristics of general, disorder-related, and decision-maker was only significant in the level of education of decision-maker(p<0.012) as statistical data. There were meaningful results in statistics; an experience of alternative therapy before diagnosis on decision making -related factors(p<0.013), an experience of encouraging alternative therapy(p< 0.000), confidence in alternative therapy(p<0.004), a plan on other alternative therapy(p<0.000). 5. As the result of logistic regression analysis, decision making -related factors about alternative therapy was an experience of encouraging alternative therapy(p<0.037), a plan on discuss with alternative therapy medical staff(p<0.029), and doctor's agreement with alternative therapy(p<0.033). In conclusion, this study explained that stroke patients were using combined way which are alternative method and regular hospital treatment for improving health condition and treatment after they discharged. Therefore, it is needed that providing information and education about alternative therapy through opened communication with medical team. The result of this research could be basic data in developing nursing intervention for stroke patients.
