To research the current condition of complementary and alternative therapy use of cerebral stroke patients and the related factors, structured 27-question survey, 12 questions regarding general characteristics and 15 questions regarding the use of complementary and alternative treatment, were taken by 300 cerebral stroke patients going to neurology and neurosurgery department in a teaching hospital in Daegu from March to April 2009. The rate of complementary and alternative therapy use was 46.3%(139 patients), patients in their 60s took up the highest rate of 38.8%, and the ones with the income of lower than 2,000,000 Won formed 79.1%. Also, the ones with middle standard of living in metropolitan area appeared to be approximately 58%, relatively higher use rate than that of rural and small urban areas; as for the treatment satisfaction rate, 68.3% are satisfied on the whole; and 62.6% of the decisions for alternative medicine treatment use was made by patients, themselves. Among alternative medicine treatments chosen by cerebral stroke patients, medicinal herbs took up the highest rate of 14.9%(70 patients), general acupuncture formed 14.3%(67 patients), blood circulation pill formed 5.5%(26 patients), moxibustion formed 5.1%(24 patients), and multivitamin formed 4.9%(23 patients). On the other side, the cases of consulting with medicine staffs formed 39.6% in the relationship with attending physician; and as for the reason not to consult, 50.0% 'do not feel the need to consult'. Observing the distribution of medicine staffs recognizing the fact of using alternative medicine treatment, 60% of doctors, 3.6% of hospital staffs and 9.1% of nurses appear to recognize the matter. About ninety four percent of patients 'did not' stop hospital treatment to use complementary and alternative therapy; although 62.6% 'do not' have enough information on complementary and alternative therapy, 96.4% 'did not' experience side effect. As for the most worried matter when using complementary and alternative therapy, 'doubt about efficacy' took up the highest rate of 29.5%; 'do not worry' formed 25.2%; 'lapse of sickness' or 'side effect' formed 15.1%; 'expenses' and 'the finding out of hospital staff' each took up low rates of 12.2% and 3.6% and the reason for not using complementary and alternative therapy, 'do not think it is effective' took up the most rate of 44.7%(72 patients).
