The purpose of this study was to investigate 'death', one of the common themes found in Hwang Sunwon's novels included in the subject of Korean language in the 7th educational curriculum. The existing researches on Hwang Sunwon have been made in various ways and those conducted from the 1940s to the present have focused on his humanistic thinking primarily from the perspective of pure literature. While looking closely into his overall works embodying humanistic themes such as motherhood, freedom, friendship and purity, it has been found that the subject matter of ‘death’ was revealed in most of his works. The fact that a writer expresses death in his or her works does not simply signify the break with life, but is an effort to figure out life within death. Hwang Sunwon unfolded the existence and value of humans in the matter of life and death, namely humanism, by arranging death in all of his works. This study attempted to examine the relationship between death and Hwang Sunwon's literary works by looking closely into the death shown in his novels in the textbooks of Korean language subject of the 7th educational curriculum. The research on death revealed in his works would be able to measure the agony and despair of history and to figure out writer's consciousness felt by him that made efforts to overcome the tragedy of realities. In addition, the research on death enabled students to introspect the meaning of life and to establish right values regarding death, thus helping adolescent education. Included works for analysis were 7 in total and released in the textbooks of Korean language subject of the 7th educational curriculum as below: 「The Stars」, 「Old Man Making a Jar」, 「A Dog of Moknomi Village」, 「The Shower」, 「Cranes」, 「Time for You and Me」, 「Trees on a Slope」. These works could be divided into three such as true human purity with the exclusion of time element, the pure world with the instinct of life, and the public world reflecting the historical passage. The works included in the pure world were 「The Stars」, 「Old Man Making a Jar」, 「A Dog of Moknomi Village」, 「The Shower」, which let the readers maintain a certain distance from society and make contemplate the question of life and death and human existence. In particular, the death of characters in the works represented motherhood, life and growth, which were suggested as the methods of overcoming the tragic realities of contemporary society. In contrast, the works belonging to the public world were 「Cranes」, 「Time for You and Me」and 「Trees on a Slope」and the death shown in these works was revealed as an aspect of war damage and they attempted to get it over through friendship, life and motherhood. The approach that the aspects of death may be divided into the two worlds would be derived from writer's consciousness that there were limitations in depicting various aspects of human lives without reflecting external environments. Especially, social aspects were uncovered in most works in the aftermath of 6·25 Korean War. Through the experiences of war, the writer rediscovered human freedom and the value of life and reflected them in his literary works, suggesting the attitudes of life that we needed to take. By highlighting death in all of his works, the writer expressed his opinions about how meaningful the humanistic value could be. True humanistic value - this could be the fundamental thought of humanism underlying the literature of Hwang Sunwon. It has been noted that the death shown in Hwang Sunwon's novels was not simply depicted tragically, but it could be a method of resolving the detachment between the times and life. It is expected that the research on death will be helpful to adolescent education by letting students reflect the meaning of life and establish proper values on death.
