Increasing industrial activities, urbanization and use of vehicles have contributed to the increasing variety and concentration of particles. The result of increasing fine particles is currently causing significant damage to the ecosystem and human health even at low concentrations. Heavy metals found within the air are also being constantly released by fossil fuel combustion and other activities that require combustion at high temperatures. Monitoring programs, typically for the vehicles and industries, that detect anthropogenic sources of heavy metals incorporated in fine particles are; thus; crucial at this stage. Consequently, many studies assessing the risk and exposure of fine particles to human body and the environment are rapidly progressing. In this study, varying sizes of particles (over 18, 18-10, 10-5.6, 5.6-3.2, 3.2-1.8, 1.8-1.0, 1.0-0.56, 0.56-0.32, 0.32-0.18, 0.18-0.1, and 0.1-0.056㎛) have been collected using Micro Orifice Uniform Deposit Impactor(MOUDI, Model 110, MSP corporation). The sample was collected along the street of Severance hospital in Yonsei University, located at Shinchon-dong, Seodaemun-gu in Seoul, Korea. The sample was taken in total of 10 times consecutively during December, 2007 to November, 2008. The distribution of heavy metals in each particle size has also been analyzed by AAS(Model HGA 900, Perkin Elmer, USA) for different seasons, traffic volume and haze condition. Furthermore, the distribution of particle size within the respiratory system has been examined for further risk assessment of human health.Fine particles of varying size demonstrated higher concentration in winter compared to fall. Considering the traffic volume, particles less than 1.0㎛ revealed higher concentration during the weeks of higher traffic conditions. Higher concentration of fine particles was also apparent in the fall season, which the frequent haze conditions cause respiratory symptoms compared to non haze conditions. In terms of the assessment of heavy metals, significant difference has been observed between winter and fall, in which the concentration of Cr, Ni, Pb, and Cd were higher in winter. Moreover, the concentration of heavy metals was higher during the week in comparison to the weekend, except for Pb. With the exception of Cd, the haze conditions developed during the fall season showed higher concentration of heavy metals compared to non haze conditions.Long-term monitoring programs detecting various anthropogenic sources of fine particles and the changes in forecast are necessary at this stage. Accordingly, the risk assessment has been performed to determine the distribution of heavy metals in the respiratory system and the dispersal of associated particle size. As a result, both the particles ranges from 0.1 to 1.0㎛ and the particles less than 0.1㎛ were highly concentrated in the alveolar and trachea-bronchiole. With respect to the particle size, the assessment of risk contribution on alveolar and trachea-bronchiole was higher for particles less than 0.1㎛. In contrast, the particles larger than 1.0㎛ were found to cause significant risk to pharynx and larynx. As a result, it is predicted the smaller particles will reveal higher chance of causing respiratory symptoms through their accumulation within the inner region of the respiratory system. From these results, the ultrafine and the fine particles less than 1.0㎛ can be predicted to cause considerable health risk to the human body, especially in alveolar in which the fine particles less than 1.0㎛ act as dominating risk. Consequently, it is strongly suggested that the anthropogenic sources of fine particles generated by vehicles should be controlled and haze arising as a result of weather conditions should be considered before carrying out outdoor activities.
