The objective of the present study is to explain the meaning of critical literacy as a quality required of citizens in knowledge based society and to look for Social Studies learning methods for the cultivation of critical literacy. In contemporary society where knowledge has a critical value in every area of the society, learners are contacting knowledge and information based on various ideologies. In order for the learners to live as a democratic citizen in this situation, they need to be equipped with critical literacy for reading knowledge and social phenomena critically. Critical literacy is an ability to see critically social and political variables affecting cognizing subjects. With this ability, people read the world surrounding them and imagine an ideal world. From the viewpoint of critical literacy, knowledge is not fixed but is constructed actively by cognizing subjects as in the constructivist view of knowledge. Critical literacy is focused on the ability to raise questions on social contexts forming texts in order to understand the genuine meaning of the texts, and induces one to grow into a critical and reflective subject equipped with abilities to see the self and the society with a broad view. Critical literacy functions as a frame for reading the values and ideologies of knowledge. Through problem-posing, critical literacy leads one to assume a critical and objective attitude toward what has been taken for granted. Problem-posing makes people challenge ‘being natural’ and recognize hidden ideologies or social practices and identify ruling ideologies that have influenced us unconsciously, and at the same time, it helps us read the viewpoints of voiceless minorities and understand phenomena from their position. Critical literacy gives a broader and clearer view to social phenomena, and develops democratic values and attitudes required of desirable democratic citizens. A text plays the role of a window to society. With regard to this, the present study assumed that texts affect elementary students’ social awareness, and analyzed texts (textbooks and children’s newspapers), which affect elementary students’ perception of social phenomena, from the viewpoint of critical literacy. According to the results of the analysis, first, the texts were written from the viewpoint of the main streams of our society, and reflected social biases or stereotypes. Second, as they suggest a phenomenon from a position or viewpoint, they make even controversial phenomena regarded as established facts and make it difficult to see a situation from a contextual and integrated viewpoint. Third, texts seem to assume an objective and neutral viewpoint, but spotlight or conceal specific facts. Based on the results of the analysis, I made suggestions as follows for learning to cultivate critical literacy in Social Studies education. First, learners should understand the literal meanings of texts by reading their denotations. Second, learners should read the world 'through' texts, going beyond the denotations of texts. Third, learners should acquire alternative perspectives for social justice, rather than taking the established viewpoints of texts. Learning for cultivating critical literacy in Social Studies helps students see social phenomena from various viewpoints and perceive the society in a balanced way. Furthermore, it develops democratic values and attitudes such as tolerance and social justice so that the students may grow into citizens who lead a just and democratic life.
