Korean society is rapidly transforming into a multi-racial and multicultural society, and in particular, an increase in international marriage has caused notably high influx of women. Married immigrant women are gaining the most attention among immigrants because they form a family, give birth to children and provide labor in various areas. International marriage, however, causes serious social problems of family disbandment due to language barrier among family members, cultural conflicts, children’s education problems, and domestic violence. As the ability to communicate is deemed one of the main causes behind these problems, Korean language education is gaining traction again. This study identified the problems of functional literacy-centered education and Korean education from the perspective of assimilation. In order to address these problems, the study was carried out with the aim of forming the subjectivity of married immigrant women through critical literacy education based on Freire's education philosophy. Critical literacy education is aimed to form a subjectivity that helps married immigrant women actively participate in individual and social change by recognizing their situations, critically thinking about the problem and actively engaging in alleviating inequality. The research questions are about the process of developing a critical literacy program for the formation of subjectivity of married immigrant women and the formation of subjectivity of participants through critical literacy program. Critical literacy education was conducted according to Freire's problem-posing education, dialogue and discussion, and the Praxis principles of practice and reflection. Research participants were 6 married immigrant women of the K Global Center under the Ministry of Justice. This study was conducted with reference to the reflective spiral model of Kemmis and McTaggart(1998) and with the phase of understanding the problem of Korean language education of married immigrant women, preparation stage and the four phase of circulation. Each cycle consists of planning, action, observation, and reflection. In the first cycle, marriage immigrant women raised questions about their assumptions, and the second cycle was the stage of lively conversation and discussion on the topic among the research participants. The third was the stage of participants’ carrying out and sharing, and the fourth was the stage of reflection. The steps of each cycle were organically connected and cyclic to each other. The results of the study include class recordings, two rounds of individual interviews, focus group interview, performance recordings, researcher's reflection log, and so on. These materials were qualitatively analyzed and organized. The results of this study are as follows. First, a critical-liberal type of action research method was highly effective and appropriate to develop a critical literacy program. This is because the purpose of the program and action research shares Freire's theoretical and philosophical positions. In addition, as the process of program was based on participants’ current life, learner-centered education has brought huge satisfaction and educational effects to all research participants. Second, in the problem-posing phase of the subjectivity formation, the married immigrant woman began to escape from the practice of remaining silent and recognize the problem of the surroundings where people did not listen to. In the dialogue and discussion stage, the participants showed the ability to think critically, embrace different perspectives and empathize at the same time associated individual problems with the social dimension. At the stage of practice, participants tried to overcome alienation in unequal relationship and to develop autonomy and decision-making ability by making small changes and sharing into their lives. At the stage of reflection, the process of resistance to prejudice and discrimination was shared through the interaction. They learned to overcome prejudice and discrimination through interaction and put more time into critical reflection by writing a journal. As a result, they began to dream about the future while trying to escape from a passive and dependent life. Therefore, based on the results of this study, Korean language education for immigrants in the future should go beyond functional literacy education. The program also should help address problems and conflicts affecting married immigrant women themselves through critical literacy education and form subjectivity as an independent individual who can play an important role in our society.
