This study was aimed to find out how the use of technological instruments could affect the students' understanding on the translation of the graphs for the quadratic functions. With the purpose of performing the specific observation of the positive attributes of the technological instruments in helping the students to overcome their difficulties, the researcher carried out a teaching experiment on the 9th-grade Korean students who had difficulties in understanding the translation of the graphs for the quadratic functions. During the experiment, the researcher paid special attention to the technological instruments's effect on the students' understanding. Two main areas of the observation were: 1. What is happening to the students' understanding on the translation of the graphs for the quadratic functions when the technological instruments based inquiry activities are introduced? 2. What is the effect of the technological instruments in students' understanding on the translation of the graphs for the quadratic functions? To have the answers to these questions, the researcher drafted 5 students who showed limited understanding on the translation of the graphs for the quadratic functions. The researcher carried out the pre-test, the teaching experiment, and the post-test for each student. The researcher did the role of the instructer to be engaged in all the process of the experiment, doing the voice-recording, videotaping, and keeping the on-the-spot report on every class. After analyzing the collected data, the researcher has reached the following conclusions: First, when the technological instruments based inquiry activities were applied students understood the relationship between the analytical representation and the graphical representation, to reach the understanding of the translation of the graphs for the quadratic functions. Also, students were modifying their previous understanding on the translation of the graphs for the quadratic functions. Further, based on the understanding of the vertex form a quadratic function, which is y=(x-p)^(2)=q, students were expanding their understanding to the standard form a quadratic function, which is y=ax^(2)+bx+c. Second, in carrying out the survey activities, when students faced the discordance between their intuition and the actual horizontal translation of the graphs for the quadratic functions, students verified the fact that they should use the opposite sign for the horizontal translation, before they modified the previous misunderstanding. In surveying the reason for using the "opposite sign," however, students had difficulties. Considering this, the researcher reached the conclusion that, when utilizing the technological instruments, proper didactical treatment needs to be parallelled for the students to reach the relational understanding of "using the opposite sign" for the horizontal translation of the graphs for the quadratic functions. Third, after the technological instruments based survey activities, students were putting the knowledge on the principle of translation to the related understanding of the formulas and graphs for the quadratic functions. Students also were able to apply the principle of translation to the understanding of the linear functions with the standard form of y=ax+b, and to the fractional functions with the standard form of y=(a)/(x). Forth, the researcher confirmed that the technological instruments's functions of translation, graphing, the drag mode, zooming, and the constant controller help the students to relate the change of a formula with the shift of a graph, when they try to understand the translation of the graphs for the quadratic functions. The technological instruments also helps the students to verify their understanding and to correct their misunderstanding. The technological instruments also enables the students to be engaged in the survey activities concerning the new problem situation, resulting the expansion of their understanding. By providing the students with the survey activities concerning the change of a formula followed by the change of the graph, this tool enables the students to be engaged in the survey activities of changing the graphs, helping the students to relate the formulas to the graphs.
