School facilities are the place where not only educational activities of students and teachers but also their daily living take place; therefore, health care and sanitation are an important element in school life. In order to secure the school environment in which health care and hygiene are maintained, water supply and sanitation facilities that students can conveniently use are to be installed. This study aims to propose the standard for installation of water supply and sanitation facilities by investigating the water feeding facilities and sanitation devices currently installed in elementary and middle schools and by examining the existing literatures regarding the subject. The conclustions of this study are as follows. 1) To plan and build hygienic and safe water feeding facilities, it is required to set up the measurement standard for the amount of water needed in elementary, middle, and high schools, and the standard method of water supply that takes into account the safety of drinking water. First, the investigation of the maximum amount of drinking water consumed in each level of school shows that 35.2ℓ per a student a day are consumed in elementary school, while 32ℓ per a student a day in male middle school, 52ℓ per a student a day in coed middle school, 52.6ℓper a student a day in female middle school, 65.2ℓper a student a day in male high school, 66.4ℓ per a student a day in coed high school, and 107.2ℓper a student a day in female highschool. Second, the investigation on the method and system of water supply shows that tap water is the optimal method to supply drinking water supplied in water-filtering system and dining room, while water for washing should be supplied separately to lavatory bowls & the sinks and to toilets to secure sanitation for students and install a water saving system that contains rainwater. 2) Hygiene facility is indispensible to secure the safety and hygiene of drinking water, which are to establish an agreeable educational environment and the health care system for students, and provide the resting place that guarantees students' mental stability and convenient use. First, it is proved that considering the average moving distances of the students, one unit of water-filtering jug should be placed for one to two classrooms in elementary school and for three to four classrooms in middle and high schools. Second, although the students usually use the sinks in rest rooms for hand washing and teeth brushing, the surroundings in most cases are not hygienic. Therefore, water suppliers should be place in separate places which are clean and hygienic. At least one unit of water supplier should be installed for one classroom in elementary and middle schools, and for two to three classrooms in high school. Third, separate shower rooms for school personnel are required while the shower rooms for female personnel should take into consideration their privacy. The shower rooms for students, considering the maintenance and hygiene of the facility, should be arranged in one unit for the entire students of a school year. Fourth, the rest rooms for school personnel would rather be placed beside teachers' study rooms. In man's room, the bowels and the stools should be installed by the ratio of 9 to 1, while in woman's room the ratio should be 6 to 4. Fifth, considering the ranges of students' physical activities, students' rest room should be place in one unit for three to four classrooms in elementary school, and for four to five classrooms in middle and high schools. In man's room, the bowels and the stools should be installed by the ratio of 9 to 1, while in woman's room the ratio should be 8 to 2. Sixth, it is proved that students urinate two to three times a day and go to stool one time per week on the average, and that as the school years lowers dow to elementary school, the frequency of going to restroom decreases. It means that a standard for the arrangement of rest rooms is needed in designing men's room in schools.
