Silk which is generally known as clothing material is recently studied as a functional material of a protein in various uses. In fact, silk is of excellence in physical and chemical quality as a protein fiber by itself. In addition, the recent studies revealed that the representative materials composing silk (glycine, alanine, and sericine etc) have effects in keeping moistures and protecting skin from ultraviolet rays. This study develops products by using silk protein which is the hydrolysate of cocoons, and investigates its effects in the light of a possibility of silk being used as the component of hair cosmetics with the functional performances of cocoons being considered. Specifically, various silk peptide conditioners which have difference in the molecular weight of silk peptide and component amounts were formulated. And then these products were analysed and evaluated the conditioning effects from following two experimental ways: measuring basic physical property of hair samples (hair weight, hair thickness, light absorption index, and moisturizing abilities) and observing physical changes in microstructure of hairs using AFM (Atomic force microscope) in order to analyze its effectiveness as hair cosmetics, i.e. how effectively silk peptide component which is small in molecular size penetrates into the damaged hair. As a result, the hair samples after the silk peptide conditioner were found to have increased weight and thickness as well as excellent moisturizing abilities compared to the damaged hair and control samples. And the samples after the silk peptide conditioner were also recovered to have cuticle condition equivalent to that of healthy hair in roughness. Especially the microscopic images and their surface line profiles showed that the silk peptide component generally adheres to the surface of chemically damaged hair and to smoothly fill in the damaged parts of cuticle. Thus, the hair conditioner containing silk peptide can be used as one of the effective natural hair conditioning products in the future. Furthermore, in contrast to the microscopic structure analysis using SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) which have limitation in showing only two-dimensional image, the methodology, microscopic structure analysis using AFM presented herein not only can effectively show the microstructure of hairs through three dimensional images but provide useful data such as heights and line profiles of cuticles for analysing the roughness of hair.
