The purpose of this study is to determine how much nursing students' stress from clinical practices and their satisfaction at clinical practices may depend upon their sex role identity, and is also to examine potential associations of sex role identity - as one of their personal characteristics - with their stress and satisfaction related to clinical practices. Total 235 students attending at a nursing college in Gangneung city, were recruited sample and were asked to join a questionnaire survey for data collection and analysis from October 20 to 22, 2008. For research tools, this study adopted the Korean Sex Role Inventory (KSRI) to measure different types of sex role identity, and also used the Clinical Practice Stress Inventory (Hwang, 2002) to measure nursing students' stress from clinical practices. And in order to measure nursing students' satisfaction with clinical practices, this study adopted the Clinical Practice Satisfaction Inventory (Kang & Cho, 1984) as well as a modified version of Clinical Practice Satisfaction Inventory (Lee, 2004; originally developed by Lee, 2001). For data analysis, this study used SPSS(ver. 12.0), a statistical program to determine mean, standard deviation, percentage and Pearson's correlation coefficient, and perform t-test and ANOVA, Scheffe's test. The results of this study can be outlined as follows: 1) Types of sex role identity In regard to types of sex role identity, it was found that our nursing students scored 4.90±.64 points in masculinity index on the average, and scored 4.42±.73 points in femininity index on the average. Based on the above scores, it was found that there were four major types of sex role identity our nursing students had, such as androgyny, undifferentiated, masculinity and femininity type. Here, most of nursing students belonged to androgyny type 80 students(34.0%), and other nursing students belonged to undifferentiated type 77 students(32.8%), masculinity type 42 students(17.9%) and femininity type 36 students(15.6%) respectively. 2) Nursing students' stress from clinical practices It was found that our nursing students scored 3.43±.52 points out of full 5 on average in their stress from clinical practices. According to the measurement of their stress from clinical practices depending upon subcategories, it was found that they scored 3.45±.51 points in contextual stress, 3.23±.64 points in personal stress and 3.62±.67 points in a stress from external coordination on the average respectively. 3) Nursing students' satisfaction at clinical practices It was found that nursing students scored 2.96±.43 points out of full 5 points on average in their satisfaction at clinical practices. According to measurement of their satisfaction at clinical practices depending on subcategories, it was found that they scored 3.46±.87 points in satisfaction at practice curriculum, 3.13±.85 points in satisfaction at practice duration, 3.10±.52 points in satisfaction at practice content, 2.87±.83 points in practice evaluation, 2.58±.56 points in satisfaction at practice instructions, and 2.58±.66 points in satisfaction at nursing practice environment on average respectively. 4) Stress from clinical practices and satisfaction at clinical practices depending on different types of sex role identity According to the measurement of nursing students' stress from clinical practices depending on types of sex role identity, it was found that androgyny type group, masculinity type group, femininity type group aundifferentiated type group scored 3.43±.58, 3.38±.42, 3.43±.44 and 3.41±.44 points in their stress on the average respectively, but there was no significant difference among those four type groups on a statistical basis. In terms of satisfaction at clinical practices, it was found that androgyny type group, masculinity type group, femininity type group and undifferentiated type group scored 3.01±.47, 2.96±.40, 2.93±.38 and 2.89±.42 points in their satisfaction on the average. Although there was no significant difference in their satisfaction among groups on a statistical basis, there are significant differences in their satisfaction at practice curriculum and content, which are part of subcategories of clinical practices, among groups on a statistical basis. On the other hand, it was found there were certain differences in satisfaction at practice curriculum between Androgyny type group 3.65±.64 points and undifferentiated group 3.47±.88 points (p<.05), and there were also certain differences in satisfaction at practice content between androgyny type group 3.22±.60 point and femininity group 2.88 ±.48 points (p<.01). 5) Potential correlations among masculinity index, femininity index, stress from clinical practices and satisfaction at clinical practices It was found that masculinity index was in significantly positive correlations with femininity index (r=.409, p=.000), whereas there was not any significant correlation of satisfaction at clinical practice with masculinity index, femininity index and stress from clinical practice. However, it was found that stress from clinical practice was in significant negative correlations with satisfaction at clinical practice (r=-.437, p=.000). With regard to nursing students' sex role identity, this study demonstrated that androgyny type group reacted more sensitively to stress from clinical practice than other type groups. Moreover, it was found that androgyny type group felt more satisfied partially at clinical practices than other type groups. Thus, it is concluded that as a strategic means to relieve their stress from clinical practices and improve their satisfaction at clinical practices, the verification of nursing students' sex role identity will possibly open up a good opportunity to get a further profile of their characteristics and also explains the reason why it is required to understand their personal characteristics depending on their types of sex role identity and to reflect those characteristics on educations at clinical practice sites.
