This paper focuses on the study of 「the French Suite No. 5, BWV 816」by J. S. Bach(1685-1750). The origin and formation of suite, which played a major role in the development of instrumental music in Baroque era(1600-1750), were examined. Also the suites by Froberger(1616- 1667), who influenced Bach`s suites and played the most important role in harpsichord music of the era are discussed. The basic movements of Froberger’s suite were composed of Allemande-Courante-Sarabande- Gigue form which became the fixed standard of suites in the late Baroque era and a model for J. S. Bach's suites. Among many works of his instrumental music, Bach composed six French suites, six English suites and six partitas for the stringed keyboard instrument. The research concentrated on the French suites which use the most standard form of a suite and compared them with English suites of Bach and suites composed by Purcell(1659-1695) and Handel(1685-1759). Also, Bach's Partitas, which were composed in freer format from a typical suite were examined. To enhance the understanding of Bach’s suite, the characteristics of French suites, English suites, and Partitas were studied and compared. 「French Suite No. 5」by Bach includes seven various dances of Allemande, Courante, Sarabande, Gavotte, Bourre´e, Loure and Gigue. Each dance is analyzed to understand its distinctive characteristics. By studying the details in counterpoint techniques, imitation techniques, harmony, and tonal changes, it is the author's wish to reveal Bach's compositional intentions shown in his 「French Suite No. 5」.
