The purposes of this study were (1) to measure the effect of the amount of residual bone and bone types on primary implant stability in the maxillary sinus model, and (2) to evaluate the correlation among them. We used 4.0 mm diameter, 10.0 mm length and RBM surfaced implants. After type 3 and 4 wood plates similar to the intensity of the maxillary posterior bone were made by the thickness of 1.0, 3.0, 5.0 and 7.0 mm, we devided groups according to the thickness and wood plate types. In control group, we prepared implant recipient sites according to the manufacturing company's instruction by using sequentially diameter 1.8 mm guide drill, 2.0 mm twist drill, 2.7 mm pilot drill, 2.7 mm twist drill, 3.3 mm pilot drill, 3.3 mm twist drill, and then inserted RBM surfaced implant (Osstem Co., korea) on the 3.0 mm thickness wood plate of type 3. We made implant recipient sites sequentially on the 5.0 mm thickness of type 3 in group 1, 7.0 mm thickness of type 3 in group 2, 3.0 mm thickness of type 4 in group 3, 5.0 mm thickness of type 4 in group 4 and 7.0 mm thickness of type 4 in group 5. The mean values of primary implant stability were measured by using Osstell^(TM) mentor, Periotest and insertion torque of the implant motor at implant installation and then compared with each group. ANOVA was used for statistical analysis to compare the averages of two groups by SPSS 12.0. The results were like that; 1. In the 1.0 mm thickness, all specimens of type 3 and type 4 were broken when the implant recipient sites were prepared. 2. The insertion torque increases as follows: control group, group 1, group 2 in type 3 and group 3, group 4, group 5 in type 4. In the 3.0 mm thickness, mean values of the primary implant stability in group 3 shows the lowest among other groups. There is statistically significant difference between group 1, 5 and other groups(p<0.05). 3. Mean values of ISQ measured by using Osstell^(TM) mentor after installation of implants increases as follows: control group, group 1, group 2 in type 3 and group 3, group 4, group 5 in type 4. In the 7.0 mm thickness, mean values of the primary implant stability in group 2 presents the highest among other groups. In the 3.0 mm thickness, mean values of the primary implant stability in group 3 displays the lowest among other groups. There is statistically significant difference between control group, group 1, 4, 5 and other groups(p<0.05). 4. Mean values of PTV measured by using Periotest after installation of implants increases as follows: group 2, group 1, control group in type 3 and group 6, group 5, group 4 in type 4. In the 7.0 mm thickness, group 2 represents statistically higher value of the primary implant stability than any other groups. There is statistically significant difference between group 1, 4 and other groups(p<0.05). In type 3 and 4, the more bone thickness the higher insertion torque significantly and the lower mean values of PTV(p<0.05). 5. There is a statistically significant correlation among devices measuring the implant primary stability(p<0.05). 6. For the same type, the thicker the wood plates, the higher the value of the primary implant stability(p<0.05). In summary, mean values of the primary implant stability are affected by the amount of residual bone when measured with conventional test devices and insertion torque test. So, it means that the higher primary implant stability is acquired by the plenty of residual bone and good quality of bone types.
