Natural smoke ventilator is one of domestic prescriptive methods to be used to exhaust smoke in case of fire in a high-rise buildings. The goal of this study is to evaluate the stack effect and the smoke exhaust performance in high-rise buildings with the opening of natural smoke ventilators using computer aided modeling technology, thus to estimate its effectiveness as a tool of smoke exhaust. At first, a domestic high-rise building with natural smoke ventilators was selected for this study and the pressure differential was measured to analyze the stack effect with the closure or the opening of natural smoke ventilators. Computer modeling based on experimentally measured data was carried out to estimate effectiveness of natural smoke ventilators in high-rise buildings using CONTAMW program developed by NIST-USA. An appropriate compensation technique for the air tightness of the modeled building was implemented to increase the modeling accuracy by comparing computational results with experimental data. Other input variables in the computer model were based upon outside air temperatures of Seoul TAC 2.5%, wind velocities of average and maximum speed. This compensated model was used to predict the pressure differentials, the position of neutral plane and mass flow rates upon opening of natural smoke ventilators at fire in high-rise buildings of 40F, 80F and 120F. The results of this study were summarized as follows. 1. Experimental measurement 1) Differential pressure due to stack effect for the normal state of the 40F test building was experimentally measured and shown to be very close to the analytical expectation. Neutral plane of the building was found to be located near 6th floor, 28.8% of the height of vertical stairway shaft due to the relatively large openings at the bottom of the building. Decrease in outdoor temperature strongly changed its stack effect to increase maximum differential pressure. 2) Both experimental and computational results showed that neutral plane moved toward the openings of the building upon opening natural smoke ventilators. The movement of the neutral plane changed the pressure distribution of the building and may cause frequent failure of the door openings due to the large pressure differential. The opening of ventilators of the top floor at outdoor temperature of -5 ℃ needed door opening force of 130N in the elevator lobby on the first floor. The opening of ventilators of the bottom floor at outdoor temperature of -5 ℃ needed the door opening force of 140N in the elevator lobby on the 39th floor. These forces exceeded maximum door opening force of 110N in the National Fire Safety Code. 2. Modeling & wall tightness compensation for the test building 1) Based on the experimental data modeling of the building using CONTAMW was carried out and showed that neutral plane of the real building was located between at 28.2% of the vertical shaft height for Tight wall and at 29.1% for Average tight wall. 2) To provide a more precise prediction for the building model, a compensated wall tightness of was obtained from the repeated computer simulations. 3. Performance estimation of natural smoke ventilators 1) It was estimated that smoke exhaust performance of natural smoke ventilator only existed for more than 29% floor height of the stairway shaft with the conditions of outdoor temperature of TAC 2.5%(11.1℃) and wind velocity of 2.4m/s. With maximum wind velocity of 16.7 m/s, little smoke exhaust performance was expected for 40F and 80F building. In 120F building only more than 72% floor height of the building had smoke exhaust performance. This results mainly caused by the stack effect provide the necessity of performance based design rather than simple prescriptive design in high-rise buildings. 2) Regarding the opening mode of natural smoke ventilators at fire the performance of smoke exhaust was more efficient with the one-floor opening of rather than the multi-floor opening of natural smoke ventilators due to the movement of neutral plane toward the openings. 3) The air tightness of the exterior wall had some impact on the smoke control efficiency of natural smoke ventilators with the increase of building height. In 40F building little effect was found and in 80F building the variation was 3F, in 120F building the variation was 5F. It should be noted that in ultra-high-rise buildings air tightness of the exterior wall strongly affects smoke control efficiency of natural smoke ventilators. 4) According to the comprehensive modeling analysis it was concluded that smoke control efficiency of natural smoke ventilators in high-rise buildings was more affected by outdoor climatic conditions and building height rather than air tightness or opening mode. Natural smoke ventilators installed on approximately more than 30% floor height of the building can have smoke exhaust performance at fire with conditions of outdoor temperature of TAC 2.5%(11.1℃) and average wind velocity of 2.4m/s regardless of air tightness of exterior wall and building height. With extreme climatic conditions additional performance based analysis on the smoke control efficiency of natural smoke ventilators is needed for high-rise building fires.
