(A) Study on the Desire of Confession in Self-Portraits:Focused on the Poems of Seo Jeong-Ju, Yun Dong Ju and Lee Sang's Self-Portraits원문보기

The objective of this thesis is to interpret self-reflective poems, written by three poets, Seo Jeong Ju, Yoon Dong Ju, and Lee Sang, representative of 1930s' poetry of introspection introspective poetry, as a confessional form in context of sublimation and desublimation; reveal the three poets' colorful varicolored aspects of desire for confession, and find the contemporary meaning for confession. The self-portrait poems examined for this paper are Self-Portrait by Seo Jeong Ju and Yoon Dong Ju, Mirror, Self-Portrayal (Study), and Self-Image by Lee Sang. And, for the sake of a richer discussion, additional poems and texts are discussed. These poems were chosen with confidence that the fact each poet concentrates on his Self will serve as a foundation for most direct and effective way of demonstrating individuality and essence of the desire for confession. Seo Jeung Ju rejects euphemism in its entirety and stares directly at the trueface of the world, and shows his persistent effort to capture it in his language. Separated from the order of reality the world, and in conflict with ethics, morals, value judgments, and social norms, his poetic journey toward "an infinite pleasure" corresponds to the process of his "wandering with the wind", seeking to realize the basic human desire and to find oneness a point of unity with the world. His inclination and determination to focus on the outside of reality (the surreal) clearly demonstrates the free-spirit of the nomadic Self that wants to overcome the barriers he is facing. Most notable is that his desubliminal passion, while defying the conventional systems, customs, and taboos, does not purport to establish new systems or conventions. Its aim as a creative subject refusing to follow the established order is to reject and oppose the fixed course. Here comes into being the morals of the poet beyond the morals of the time. The self-portrait painted by Seo Jeong Ju is "a remorseless man ", who stands naked in front of the world, having entirely removed the false, hypocritical, and artificial self. If Seo Jeong Ju tries tirelessly to unlock the door of oppression and taboos, Yoon Dong Ju determinedly strives to keep it in order. His whole poetic world is ruled by a voice of introspection and reflection. It is not a pathetic voice of self-consolation or self-comfort but a thorough process of self-discipline. This is clearly different from Seo's self-inquiry that gives a frank confession of his secretive reticent Self sans concrete medium and even goes so far as violating taboos without hesitance. Yoon wants to turn toward something of higher value by endlessly putting chaos of Self in order viacertain avenue like looking in the well, looking up at the skies and stars, and wiping the mirror. And, of course, he willingly endures the masochistic pain as did Prometheus. This is the power that not only allows the poet to portray the self-image as "the one with an incessant need for self-reflection". Lee Sang creates a unique case of "alienation" with a cynical eye of clairvoyance, dismantlement, and ridicule. This is the "self-textualization." He escapes from Kim Hae Kyong as Lee Sang, transforms himself to an ideal, writes out that ideal as a text "Lee Sang", and finally lives out a dream life as a textualized Self. This unprecedented strategy is the poet's earnest ideal ofovercoming the sordid reality. Yet, the mask of Lee Sang keeps coming off when Kim Hae Kyung resurfaces as an obsessive compulsive Being, whom Lee Sang has created within his Ideal Self. To elaborate the confessions dissolved in the poems "Self-Portrait" and "Mirror Poems" are most deconstructive discernment of Self, as they are an exhaustion of Lee Sang in the process of determination and proposition, progress, and stranding of the project "Ideal Self". Important to note is that this infinite tension and conflict is the fundamental energy that constantly keeps him alive as the literary subject. He clearly unveils the two opposing Selfs, by acknowledging the disconnected self in the mirror who is constantly "kept at a distance", and thus may as well be "the 'I' unbeknownst to me". However, his unveiling does nothing more but confirm the state of opposition before a perfectly reemerged image of Self: It fails to fully integrate the true "I". "I" is not self-evident but is each an individual "engrossed absorbed in an evil ways." At last, existence of Cartesian "I" itself becomes a question and begins to collapse. On the one hand, the frame of an ideological border between sublimation and desublimation appears to become null and void. It is the unlocking of a Subject who attempts to grasp the "I" and the Other from a different perspective in today's increasingly chaotic reality. Seo Jung Ju, Yoon Dong Ju, and Lee Sang respond to the world with strikingly distinctive approaches of confessing. Confession becomes an instrument for confirming poets' self-existence in reaction to reality's physical power afflicting them with great pressure. Through confession, a poet is able to realize true relations between self and the world and dare to paint an authentic self-portrait. What's more, confession serves as an opportunity for the poet to directly recognize how deeply he has been woven into the oppressive order. By unmasking the literary frame and artistry and bringing out social absurdities in the open, confession acts as a clue for consciousness which disavows, resists, and changes social irrationality. The poems of self-depiction discussed in the second chapter go well with the circumstances of the time and effectively illustrate this aspect of confession. And, an inquiry into inherent human nature, a common theme of which these poets try to get to the bottom, has its own merit in that it strengthens the destabilized natural aspect, which is the empty space left to the history of the 1930s poetry with its focus on forms and techniques. Granted, as in the works of Lee Sang, that it is
