The purpose of this study is to present a methodological framework for continuous research and development of the stylization of Hanguk Changjak Chum (Creative Korean Dance) in accordance with the new content and style of the time. It proposes a Western terminology and concept, Mise-en-scéne, with the awareness that Hanguk Changjak Chum needs a new aesthetic category as it aspires to a contemporary theatrical expression that reflects the change of the time and space. Mise-en-scéne, a common terminology and concept in other art genres, is introduced into this study to approach the aesthetical and technical aspects as well as the forms and symbolism of the body exhibited in the Hanguk Changjak Chum stages. Generally, Mise-en-scéne refers to all elements in a scene, that is the physical environment that surrounds the theatrical scene, through which the creator expresses his or her own style. Such effort of stylization was originated in an attempt for a true communication between the creator and the audience as the creator distinguishes oneself by presenting one's differentiated style. To promote the real communication with the audience as well as with the world in Hanguk Changjak Chum that is at a crisis of identity owing to its alienation from the audience, this paper borrows and uses the term and concept of Mise-en-scéne. Hanguk Changjak Chum has made a show of a remarkable rise in a relatively short period of time but the artistic quality has not matched the quantitative achievement. The reason would be complicated and multifaceted. Yet, this study wants to present two main reasons. First is that Hanguk Changjak Chum has lost touch with the audience while pursuing too many directions for the sake of openness and diversity, which confused the theatrical language on the stage. Second is the problem of artistic sincerity of a choreographer in the process of his/her creative work. Hence, I want to draw attention to the responsibility of a choreographer in his/her attitude toward their creative process as this study talks about the reestablishment of the aesthetic thinking for a universal communication method. In that regard, this paper sees that artistic method of the auteurism directors, who made their films based on the concept of Mise-en-scéne, would shed some lights on the problems and concerns that Hanguk Changjak Chum is experiencing at the moment. It would be argued as follows. Chapter Ⅱ defines and discusses the concepts used in the paper by introducing the terminology and concept of Mise-en-scéne in a greater detail. Chapter Ⅲ seeks to provide a theoretical ground for the application of a Western concept in the discussion of Hanguk Changjak Chum, which begins with a definition of a uniquely Korean sense of beauty. It discusses the symbolism, signs, and images of Korean aesthetics followed by the comparison of the differences and similarities of the Western and Korean aesthetics to contemplate on the problems that may occur in applying a concept originated in the West to the discussion of Korean aesthetics. Such comparative analysis of the Oriental and Western aesthetics provides a chance to see how the different conceptual systems would express themselves in the cultural representation and how the characteristics such as attitude, faith, values, preferences and symbolism may operate in the psychological characteristics. It then discusses the so-called consilience theory that emphasizes the integration of various disciplines by appropriating the synthetic nature of the art of dance in its particular time, space and rhythm as it discusses Hanguk Changjak Chum and Mise-en-scéne as its method of communication. Based on the discussion of Chapter Ⅲ, Chapter Ⅳ explores the practical possibility of introducing Mise-en-scéne in Hanguk Changjak Chum. To this end, Chapter Ⅳ shows the changes in the trends and styles of Hanguk Changjak Chum and the limitations of it as it analyzes what constitutes a precondition for the introduction of the concept of Mise-en-scéne. The methodology based on Mise-en-scéne is presented as an alternative to the artistic crisis that Hanguk Changjak Chum is experiencing despite of its recent quantitative success. The introduction of the technique of Mise-en-scéne to Hanguk Changjak Chum would not be limited to its visual aspect. As this methodological search includes the symbolic and sign system for the emotional endeavor too, a further discussion of the technique of Mise-en-scéne and Hanguk Changjak Chum would demand more depth. While I present this paper as a first step toward the right direction, I want it to inspire many to join for the continuing in-depth discussions.
