The purpose of this study is to explore the effects of a career education program that is operated at elementary schools on the basis of multiple intelligences theory upon career maturity of elementary school students. For this purpose, concepts and characters of the multiple intelligences theory, career education at elementary schools and career maturity are examined theoretically and following items are set forth as themes of the study:
First, what is the influence of the career education program conducted at elementary schools on the basis of multiple intelligences theory upon career maturity?
Second, what effect does the career education program conducted at elementary schools on the basis of multiple intelligences theory have upon career choice?
Third, what influence does the career education program conducted at elementary schools on the basis of multiple intelligences theory have upon career participation?
Fourth, what is the effect of the career education program conducted at elementary schools on the basis of multiple intelligences theory upon career independence? Fifth, what kind of impact does the career education program conducted at elementary schools on the basis of multiple intelligences theory have upon preparation for career?
The career education program for elementary school students developed by Juyeon Kim on the basis of multiple intelligences theory and modified by Seongyeong Kim, researcher of precedent studies, in compliance with the elementary school level was reconstructed for use of this study as a career education program. The reconstructed program was divided proportionately into 4 major categories that may promote cognition of career as follows: self-understanding, understanding to occupation, decision making of career and career plan. The program is designed to be provided weekly by means of discretionary, autonomous and adaptive activities in a total of 12 sessions.
A career maturity test was conducted to 2 classes of the 6th grade in A Elementary School located in Iksan city as part of solving the issues of this study. Two lessons proven to have homogeneity were divided into an experimental group and a control group, respectively. The experimental group underwent a career education program 2 times a week for 6 weeks while the control group was engaged exclusively in normal classworks. T-test was made to analyze the collected data by means of SPSS/Windows 14. In a try to complement the limits of the quantitative analysis, a qualitative analysis was carried out in parallel by examining letters of impression. The paper for the career maturity test which was conducted prior to the onset of the program was used to investigate the findings of the study after the 12-session career education program was put into operation.
The findings from the analysis of the assumptions could be summed up as follows:
First, there was statistically significant difference between the experimental and control groups in scores of the post-test conducted to examine career maturity of children in an effort to determine the effects of elementary schools' career education program based on the multiple intelligences theory on elementary school students' career maturity.
Second, a statistically significant difference was confirmed between the experimental and control groups in scores of the post-test conducted to examine career choice of children in a series of exploring the effects of elementary schools' career education program based on the multiple intelligences theory on children's career choice.
Third, a statistically significant difference turned out to exist between the experimental and control groups in scores of the post-test for elementary school children's career participation conducted to examine the effects of elementary schools' career education program based on the multiple intelligences theory on their career participation.
Fourth, it was proven that there was a statistically significant difference between the experimental and control groups in the post-test scores of elementary school children's career independence conducted to find out the effects of elementary schools' career education program based on the multiple intelligences theory on students' career independence.
Fifth, a statistically significant difference was found to exist between the experimental and control groups in scores of the post-test for elementary school children's preparation for career conducted to examine the effects of elementary schools' career education program based on the multiple intelligences theory on children's preparation for career.
Although it must be admitted that there are some limitations to generalize the outcomes of this study, it may be said that the elementary schools' career education program that is based on the multiple intelligences theory is effective to promote the elementary school students' career maturity.
