This thesis is mainly focused on the common territorial system of pedestrian space in settlement. It explores the measurements to improve the common space in settlements for enhancing the meaning of co-existence in contemporary multi-family housing complexes and providing a better living environment to meet residents’ diverse demands and activities. The pedestrian space is of importance in multi-family housing complexes and settlements not only because residents recognize it as common space but because everyday social interaction takes place in it. Therefore, the design and the physical improvement of pedestrian space usually result in the enhancement of residential environment. Many researches about the restoration of spatial order of settlement in urban area have found the pedestrian path important in terms of the rehabilitation of intrinsic and functional significance. This work focused on the physical structures of common space on the basis of the findings that residential life is strongly influenced by physical characters of pedestrian spaces represented as the spatial composition elements and the structural characteristics. Thereby, this work tried to identify the elements constructing pedestrian spaces and the physical systems of pedestrian space in terms of those constructing elements. This work also tried to develop the common territorializing measurements in terms of the constructing elements of pedestrian spaces. In this thesis, pedestrian space was analyzed through literature review and settlement survey. Selected settlements were analyzed by drawing a spatial connection structure diagram which was created in this work as a presentation tool of spatial structure. The concept of common space was theoretically defined based on the territorial meaning, the edge formation method and the organization between territory and edge. This concept facilitated the development of the spatial connection structure diagram as a presentation tool of spatial structure comprised of the phase composition graph and the edge form graph. They represent the organization of territory and the organization of edge, respectively. The settlement survey was mainly performed in four distinctive settlement types; traditional village, detached house village, apartment complex, and mixed use(residential and commercial) complex. Four individual settlements in each settlement type were surveyed and analyzed by reviewing research reports and recording physical observation. Literature review and survey enabled to understand the spatial structure of pedestrian space and identify the common territorializing elements in pedestrian space. The results of this work could be summarized as below. 1. Analysis for the spatial structure of pedestrian space in settlement 1) In traditional village, road is regarded as a common space that is featured in series of gradual transitions and various functions. The edge form, the connection place of unit spaces in this village is used as access point in a passive control. 2) In detached house village, a common space has similar functions on the unit space and the edge form with those of the traditional village. However, the exposure of social contact through the surface layer of the unit space is overly limited in association with the common space of the traditional village. Consequently, various activities are rarely induced in a common pedestrian space. 3) Common space of apartment complex certainly contains diverse elements of unit space in a variety of functions and forms. Their edge forms are hard to find the continuity with any other unit spaces. Conclusive spatial organization is illustrated well due to the discontinuity of particular unit spaces. It is exceedingly different from traditional village and detached house village in terms of spatial composition element. 4) Pedestrian space of mixed use(residential and commercial) complex has an analogous spatial composition with apartment complex. Particular unit space such as intermediate phase on circulation path is not faced the dwelling unit. Even the surface layer of the unit space that reaches the last phase of the private dwelling unit does not reveal any information of the dwelling unit. Therefore, the common territorializing design elements in mixed use complex is required in order to increase the activities of communal life. 2. Common territorializing design elements to stimulate common space in settlements 1) The elements of unit space constituting common space should have the territoriality. It could be achieved by allowing the routine use of common space and planning the surface layer of unit space to hint the information of dwelling unit. Common space shall be planned either to directly enter or at least to face the dwelling unit, and then shall become routine living space. 2) Selective access control categorized into a passive or an active control shall be applied to have continuous movements on the circulation space and protect the privacy of resident in common space. Passive control, a method of edge form is utilizing the psychological and emotional effects to divide users into smaller numbers and not causing a sense of alienation in a common space. In a contrary, active control is a strong method that limits the users’ access by physical structure forcing users instantly being grouped in a small scale. Active control is often used to access the private space. When it is applied in an intermediate phase it should be controlled to remove a sense of alienation by introducing a mediating space or modifying it more flexible forms. 3) Sense of unity in common space can be fulfilled by manipulating compositional elements such as unit space and its edge. Three approaches can be proposed; (1) the inter-connections among the unit spaces and their edge forms, (2) the composition of a common space to have the similar organizations of adjacent systems using the unit space, (3) the composition of a common space as organic space by using edge forms. This work tries to provide design method to stimulate the communal activities among the residents in common space of contemporary dwelling and to improve the dwelling environment with active social interacts in a contemporary multi-family housing. This will be guidance for planning the physical structure in common space for the contemporary and the near-future dwelling environment.
