This study is to analyze music textbooks centered on music appreciation of the first graders of high school. This study has three analytic areas; to make the distribution charts on the different educational areas of the 8 official music textbooks; to employ appreciation area from the first analysis, and make and analyze regional distribution charts; to compare the appreciational differences during the certain period of time established by the author. First, the analysis of the 8 official music textbooks shows that among 1068 pieces of music, the understanding area(191 pieces) accounts for 17.9%, the singing area(374 pieces) 35%, composition area(60 pieces) 5.6%, the instrumental area(97 pieces) 9.1% and the appreciation area(346 pieces) 32.4%. Second, the regional distribution of the appreciation says that among 346 pieces of music, Korean music takes up 46.5% equivalent of 346 pieces. Let's take a deeper look. Tweleve Asian pieces account for 3.5% and specifically, 7 pieces are from East Asian countries, one South East Asian piece, one North Western Asian piece and on South Asian piece. China has 5 pieces, the biggest number of pieces, Japan has 2 pieces and one from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Pakistan and India respectively. In the meantime, European pieces account for almost the majority of foreign pieces in music textbooks, which is 46.7%. Especially, the number of pieces from Western European countries is 98 equivalent to 28.4%, which is followed by 30 Eastern European pieces(8.7%), 23 Southern European pieces(6.7%), 9 Northern European pieces(2.6%). Germany has the largest number of pieces(48) in Korean music textbooks followed by Austria(22), France(20) and Italy(20), Russia(16), Britain(6), Hungary(5), the Czech Republic(5), Bohemia(5) and Norway(5), Poland(4) and Finland(4), Espana(3), Scotland(1) and Swiss(1). Meanwhile, North America has 9 pieces(2.6%) which are all American, therefore, the US practically accounts for all pieces in North America. In South America, Jamaica is the only country which has one piece in the textbooks. There is no single piece from Oceania. Last but not least, the periodic comparison reveals that among 346 pieces, 141 pieces are publication date known ones(40.8%). Most of the pieces are Korean traditional musical pieces because it is difficult to pinpoint publication date of the Korean pieces with their unique traits. Seventy three pieces(21.1%) were published between 1800 and 1900, 36 pieces(10.4%) between 1700 and 1800. Most of the appreciation pieces were presented during this particular period of time. In addition, 6 pieces(1.7%) were published between 1500 and 1600, 2 pieces(0.6%) between 1600 and 1700, 1 piece(0.3%) after 2000 and there was no piece between 0 and 1500.
