The world today is facing a multi-cultural era in which borders between countries are collapsing and various cultures are blending together thanks to the advancement of scientific technology and information. What do we need to be prepared with in order to inherit and advance valuable, unique cultures through their selection without being swept by typified cultures amidst a flood of quickly changing knowledge, information, and culture? The future will create more advanced scientific technology and diversified culture than now. Therefore, students who will live in this future era need to create advanced, unique, and original cultures based on an understanding of unique Korean traditional cultures without losing their identities in those movements. This could be a short cut through which we will stand at the center of world culture, and traditional art education should play a guiding role. Among others, the education of Korean painting, which is our traditional painting, may play a very crucial role in promoting independent cultural capacities by arousing and establishing the spirit and identity unique within our people. However, without their own recognition students are experiencing the symptom of feeling rather unfamiliar with our unique art culture while becoming familiar only with western culture since their childhood. Throughout elementary, middle, and high schools, in reality students are made to be more acquainted with watercolor dyes and kent paper rather than Indian ink and traditional drawing papers or watercolor paintings rather than paintings in Indian ink. There is a need for looking into our Korean painting education before simply considering this phenomenon as a natural trend of culture. More than anything else, an analysis of the textbook, which is the most fundamental and basic medium of education, may be an opportunity to diagnose efficiently the problem. First, in order to discover the theoretical background ahead of a genuine analysis of the textbook, the study looked into the concept and purpose of art education, mentioned the need for Korean painting education, and aroused its importance. Second, with a view to conducting systematic research about the field of Korean painting in the seven types of art textbooks for first, second, and third graders in middle schools, the study analyzed the authors of the textbooks and their majors, the portion of Korean painting, the name of the Korean painting unit and its contents for study, and the portion of Korean painting illustrations. In addition, the study reviewed the field of Korean painting in the textbook through an analysis of the portion of reference illustrations and of explanatory illustrations, and of reference illustrations by their techniques, objects, and authors, and the contents of explanatory illustrations. In this way, the study considered the field of Korean painting in the textbooks from various angles. As a result, the study was able to discover the characteristics by publishing company and school year, and also found subsequent problems. Third, therefore, the study proposed several solutions according to an analysis of the results as follows. · The preparation of a balanced number of authors and the standard of their majors · The balanced match of the portion by area · The expansion of contents of various expressive activities · The appropriate constitution of reference illustrations and explanatory illustrations · The diversification of reference illustrations As above, the study analyzed the contents and illustrations of the Korean painting unit in the expression area in the seven types of art textbooks for first, second, and third graders in middle schools, and proposed solutions according to the problems. In that way, the study aimed to be helpful in preparation of the revised textbook, at the least, and to be committed to preparing the foundations on which more efficient and creative Korean painting education may be realized. Hopefully, in-depth, diverse studies in the field of Korean painting in the art textbook will continue, and they will formulate the fundamentals of Korean painting education, and, ultimately, they will become an opportunity to establish the identity of Korean people in the globalization era through the advancement of Korean painting.
