Trajectory of a kinematic object can be determined with an accuracy of few centimeters with Global Positioning System which had been first introduced in the eighties. This technology was applied to photogrammetry especially to aerial triangulation which reduces the need for ground control points thereby, saving cost and time related to ground surveying activities. Researches are currently being carried out for direct computation of the coordinates of the projection centers of aerial photographs. This computation is performed using the position of the moving GPS antenna which is fixed onto the airplanes. This study was undertaken to analyze the accuracy of direct computation of projection centers of aerial photographs using GPS data. A test was carried out for the photographs and the GPS data collected for the Kwachon area. GPS data sets were collected applying different values for baseline and frequency which were then used to compute the coordinates of the projection centers. These coordinates were then applied in the bundle adjustment using various configurations of ground control points.
The result of this study revealed that the signal breakages due to steep banking turns of the airplane resulted in different error patterns for each flight course. It was also found that for a baseline distance of less than 30 kilometers, the coordinates of the projection centers can be computed with accuracies of about 14 centimeters, irrespective of the frequency used if the C/A code is not used. As the direct benefit of applying the GPS reduced projection centers coordinates to bundle block adjustment, requirements of the National Survey Accuracy Specifications could be satisfied using a bridging distance of 8 models instead of the specified 2 models for planimetry control points, and in the case of height control points, a bridging distance of 8 models in each course was sufficient to achieve acceptable results.
The direct determination of the coordinates of the projection centers using GPS data has reduced the amount of ground surveying and it is expected that the results of this research will contribute to the implementation of an efficient and economic map production system.
