The central aim of this study was to examine the effect of praise on children's achievement motivation and performance after failure. In Experiment 1, eighty 4th- and 5th-grade children in Daegu and Kyungpook area were participated. They were assigned randomly to one of three conditions - person praise, process praise, no-praise condition. After children solved the first set in a series of puzzle tasks, they received praise for person, praise for process, or praise with no feedback. Next, children worked on a second set of more difficult puzzle, and all received failure feedback. Following a failure experience, persistence, enjoyment, perceived competence, affect, performance expectancy, attributions for failure, information choice, and achievement goal were measured. Children were then given a third set of puzzle, which has similar difficulty level as the first set. Task choice and performance change from the first to third set were measured again. The results showed that process praise enhances achievement motivation and person praise dampened achievement motivation. In addition, process praise led to the most adaptive pattern of attributions for failure, whereas person praise led to more maladaptive pattern. In Experiment 2, a parallel procedure was conducted with preschool children in order to examine developmental trends in how praise affects achievement motivation and attribution. The results indicated that young children's results were very similar to old children's results, indicating that preschool children seem to distinguish effort and ability. The result of two experiments showed that the type of praise has a significant effect on children's achievement motivation and performance. The process praise would lead to mastery orientation reaction and the person praise would lead to helpless reaction. Possible explanations of results, limitations to the study, as well as implications for further research are discussed.
