The purpose of this study was to research the effect of senior participation in water exercises on life-satisfaction and mental health, and to get useful information for increasing the quality of life for senior people. The subjects were 246 older adults aged over 60 years who take water exercises in 4 swimming pools in Seoul, G and J sports centers in G Ward, M and B sports centers in K Ward and 2 pools in Gyeonggi-do, H pool in H city , S pool in S city. Life-satisfaction was measured using the questionnaire items selected from the proceeding study, “A Study on Participation and Life Satisfaction of Adults in Sports Activities” (Hwang Mun Su, 2004). Questionnaire items for measuring Mental Health was selected from the proceeding study, "The relationship between Korean Traditional Dance Participation, Mental Health and Life Satisfaction among the Old Female Persons" (Lee Soon-Lim, 2004). Reliability coefficient of the questionnaire about life-satisfaction was a=.836 ~ .870 and mental health was a=.762 ~ .900. For this study, the researcher personally visited the place where the subjects take exercise and handed out the question paper to them after explaining the purpose of the questions and how to fill out the form. These procedures were completed by using ‘Self-administering method’. The collected data were computerized with the Korean version of SPSS program for Windows (version 14.0) after filtering unreliable data. Statistical process methods: Frequency analysis, Reliability analysis, Exploratory factor analysis, T-test, One-way ANOVA and Multiple regression analysis, were used for analyzing data. The results of this study were as follows; First, the results did not indicate a significant difference in life-satisfaction (psychological, environmental, physical, educational and social satisfaction) and mental health (anxiety, obsession-compulsion, interpersonal sensitivity, hostility, psychosis) according to gender, age, the existence of a spouse, education. On the other hand, there was a significant difference in educational satisfaction and anxiety according to age(p<.01). Also, it was showed in life-satisfaction according to personal expenses(p<.05). Second, there was a significant difference in life-satisfaction and mental health according to the degree of participation in water exercises(p<.01). The more frequent the participation and the longer the period, it was indicated that water exercises had the positive effects on the life-satisfaction and mental health of subjects. Third, it was indicated that life-satisfaction of subjects has an effect on their mental health. Psychological, environmental, physical, social satisfaction were related to mental health partly(p<.01). That is, it was showed that the more they satisfied with their lives, hostility and obsession-compulsion were decreased remarkably. These mean that senior participation in water exercises have an effect on their life-satisfaction and mental health, the degree of participation was a major factor and the others were insignificant. In conclusion, this paper will provide basic information to grow the participation in water exercises for old adults and these findings emphasize its importance of senior participation and propose that water exercises increase the quality of life for seniors.
