Currently, most of the historic pottery and porcelain are excavated from the ruins, maintaining their original shape or having defects due to chemical and mechanical damages. The defects cause weakness or break down of them and should be repaired or restored in the conservation treatment. For the conservation treatment, the epoxy resins are most commonly used and applied to the relics with different viscosity or rate of consolidation, according to the characteristics of them. Once the epoxy resin is applied, it is very hard to remove it from the adhesion site. This disadvantage may become a difficult problem when a distortion or incorrect restoration of the relic occurs. Thus, it is mandatory to consider carefully whether to adopt it or not before using it. Presently, the method used in removing the epoxy resin, includes soaking it in organic solvent or detaching it with manual or electric tools after it is heated. However, damage to the relic may be produced during the process. Because of it, it is necessary to study other method for exfoliating the epoxy resin safely. In this study, we searched for such an organic solvent as having ability to separate the epoxy resin easily from the relic when a problem has been developed in the repair and restoration process, and performed material analysis of the samples in order to find out what effect has been made on it. At first, three pieces of soft earthenware, hard earthenware and stoneware with different thermo-plasticity were selected as test samples. Then, each of them was broken into two pieces separately to produce cross-sections of damaged pottery or porcelain. They were glued with each other by one of the 5 epoxy resins including CDK520ⓡ, Araldite SV427+HV427ⓡ, L30ⓡ, Araldite AY103+HY956ⓡ and Araldite AW106+HV953U. After that, they were soaked for 24 hours in one of 5 organic solvents of Acetone, Toluene, Xylene, Methyl Ethyl Ketone and Epoxy Stripper SS-130ⓡ. The solvent of being able to separate the resin from the test sample was identified and the effects of the solvents on the test samples were measured. The material analysis was performed in accordance with the Korean Industrial Standards. In the soaking test, only the samples soaked in the Epoxy Stripper SS-130ⓡ showed swelling, softening and cleavage of the resin, leading to exfoliation of it from them within 6 hours, while those in the Acetone, Toluene, Xylene and Methyl Ethyl Ketone showed slight and insignificant changes. In the material analysis, the chromaticity of the samples before and after soaking was measured. and it was found that the color difference (△E*ab) between them was less than 1.0 with no significance. The results of the gloss and the weight also showed little difference between those values measured before and after soaking. In the surface observation, the samples did not revealed any damage, such as a crack or peeling off. The intensity of the soft and hard earthenware, however, decreased after soaking. The finding suggests that the samples would need reinforcing of the intensity when soaking process is over. In case of stoneware, there was no difference of intensity between pre-soaking and post-soaking and no further treatment was necessary. As an alternating method for removing the resin, the soft earthenware in which CDK520ⓡ was applied was wrapped with a highly absorbable plastic in which the Epoxy Stripper SS-130ⓡ had been absorbed previously. In order to prevent evaporation of the solvent, the earthenware was sealed again with a vinyl plastic for 24 hours. It was observed that CDK520ⓡ was peeled off from the earthenware as seen in the soaking test. This indicates that the wrapping method may be applied usefully to bulky relics or where partial removal of the epoxy resin is needed. In conclusion, it may be possible to remove safely the epoxy resin adhered to the repair site of relic, either by soaking method or by wrapping with highly absorbable plastic method, according to the state of relic and the decision of the person who deals with it. It is also considered that more excellent removal method of epoxy resin could be available in future, if further studies about it and its application are carried out carefully based on the results of this study.
