ABSTRACT For the study method of ancient lacquers, analysis on the structure of lacquer layers and the quality of constituent materials by using optical microscopes and scanning electron microscope[SEM] can be said to be the most effective. It is because major specialties of the lacquered techniques can be verified with only optical observation and analysis of the lacquer layers surfaces. In this study, the structural lacquer features were understood by examing the lacquer layers[漆塗膜] of lacquer-ware such as ShinChang-Dong remains, GwangJu, JeonNam[B.C. 3~2c]; DaHo-Ri Remaings, ChangWon, GyeongNam[A.D. 1C]; NakLang Tomb of PeongYang areas[A.D. 1~2c], BeopChun-Ri BaekJe Tomb in SeokChon-Dong, Seoul and WonJu, Gangwon-Do[A.D. 4c]; NeungSan-Ri Temple Site, BuYeo, ChoongNam[A.D. 6c], AhnAp-Ji, GyeongJoo, GyeongBook[A.D. 7~9c] and so on which were excavated as being from the early Iron Age to the United Shilla Dynasty of Korea through permeable lights and polarizing microscopes while by analyzing the materials mixed for ground lacquer and coloring ingredients used for colore lacquers through the Scanning Electron Microscopy with X-ray microanalysis[SEM-EDS] and Micro X-Ray Fluorescence[μXRF] attached to the scanning electron microscope[SEM], the distinctive characteristics of the lacquered techniques were reviewed. As a result of examination, for lacquers of the early Iron Age-Proto Three Kingdoms, most were Moksim Lacquer[木心漆器] made with relatively brief lacquer coating methods in the material and technical aspects of lacquers while Cinnabar[HgS] and smoked coal[煙煤] were shown to be used for red and black lacquers respectively. For lacquers of NakLang in a similar period, unlike this; Moksim Jophy Lacquer wares[木心苧被漆器] and Hyupjeo Lacquer wares[夾紵漆器] occupy a large number while several special factors unseen in the early Iron Age-Proto Three Kingdoms were confirmed to be possessed such as the reinforcement of a wooden basement with a fabric center(織物心), combined use of materials such as bone and wooden coal powders at the foundation lacquer[骨灰-下地]. For the Three Kingdoms Age, even though different styles of lacquers from previous ages appeared, the change of the lacquered techniques of ancient Korea lacquers could be known through the use of bone powder and the confirm of fabric centers in foundation lacquers as studied in the lacquers of BeopChun-Ri BaekJe Tomb in WonJu, Gangwon-Do and the red lacquered square box of the Shilla Tomb in BangNae-Ri, GyeongJoo. Especially, after the United Shilla Dynasty, Moksim Jophy Lacquer wares[木心苧被漆器] could be easily found which thickened the foundation lacquer by covering the wooden basement with a fabric center and mixing the bone and soil powders. Therefore, before and after this time, it is judged that the lacquer manufacturing process including the lacquer coating methods became standardized while foreign lacquer techniques were accepted as our own one. As such, Korea ancient the lacquered techniques could be seen to have developed through the indigenous method transmitted from the early Iron or the former Bronze Ages and the techniques brought in from neighboring areas after the Three-Kingdom Age being mutually fused or divided.
