ABSTRACT An Empirical Study on the Consciousness of Filial Piety and the Filial Conduct among High School Students in Korea Jong-gil Lee Department of Ethics Education Graduate School of Kong Ju National University Gong Ju, Korea This study was to investigate the actual conditions of the filial piety consciousness and the practical filial conduct of 2,345 high school students in Seoul, Daejeon, Gyeonggi and Chungcheong Nam Do Province of Korea. Based on those concrete Data, the goal of this study is to show the educational method for setting up the sound ethical values of the student, to prepare the practical plan in home, school and society for building a desirable personality and morality. The findings of the study were as follows: The conventional consciousness for filial piety of high school students in Seoul, Daejeon, Gyeonggi and Chungcheong Nam Do Province of Korea was to expressed the result numerically 3.75 out of 5.00 points, but the average in 11 items is lower than the investigation of five years ago. The education for filial piety is mainly done in order of home, school, and media, but students 15.7% have consciousness that uneducated for filial piety. The data of practical filial piety in school and home and society show us that the area of society is the lowest (3.06), and home (3.09), school (3.41) in order. The education for filial piety at home is to show the result of average 3.24, and the education for filial piety in a class at school is to show that the result average 2.32, the lowest score among 11 items. Based on these objective and concrete results, I wish to present the desirable educational method and to make the practical plans for filial piety. The practical plans for filial conduct at school and in society could be suggested as below: At school, a filial piety club should be organized to provide lots of chances for students to learn how to serve, care about and respect for others. The first day of every month should be designated as the day for filial piety and respect for the elderly, and so various kinds of programs for filial piety should be carried out in that day, in which students could be involved with their parents. Experiential learning should be reinforced by letting them pay a visit to local historical sites related to the traditional filial devotion, and separating for filial piety education should be provided by the common national curriculum. In addition, the 16 local offices of education should be equipped with a supervisor who will be responsible for filial piety education in order to strengthen that education. In society, the development and spread of contents related to filial piety and the use of media are required to offer social filial piety education in various ways. Filial conduct should be encouraged to create the good atmosphere that parents and the elderly are deeply respected for. The major national Universities should select 'traditional ethics' as one of required subjects for college entrance examination, and students who have ever won a prize for filial conduct should receive preferential treatment applying for college admission. Besides, local governments should prepare filial piety programs. As discussed above, there was a significantly positive correlation between consciousness of filial piety and practical filial conduct.
