Purpose: The purpose of this descriptive study was to understand the realities of safety accidents, physical functional and cognitive states in Geriatric Hospitalized elders, and to provide basic data concerning awareness of safety control programs. Methods: Subjects were 261 elders who had been hospitalized at the Geriatric Hospital, Pusan & Ulsan, over a selected 1-year period. Medical record data on safety accident-related characteristics, physical functional state(Functional Independent Measurement scale; FIM) and cognitive state(Mini-Mental State Examination-Korea scale; MMSE-K) was collected from October 1 - November 10, 2009. SPSS version 17.0 software was used for statistical analysis that included frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation and independent t-test. Results: Safety-related accidents comprised 26.4% of injuries. Injuries due to falling, asphyxia and skin injury were 18.8%, 6.6% and 7.3%, respectively. Falling-related injuries most commonly involved a room(place), sprain(result), tumbling(pattern) type of fall while under care for an illness. Mean FIM and MMSE-K scores were 62.04 points(perfect score 126 points) and 17.42 points(perfect score 30 points), respectively. Conclusion: No statistically significant associations between physical functional and cognitive states and safety accidents incidence were evident, except for communication item of FIM. To prevent and manage safety accidents in Geriatric Hospitalized elders, elder safety programs should focus on the individual.
