Abstract A study on the affective characteristics between gifted children and normal children Choi, Hynu-Joo Department of Early Childhood Education The Graduate School of Education Supervised by Lee, Kyung-Hwa The purpose of this study was to know out the affective characteristics of gifted children who were studied in the gifted center through the comparative study between gifted children and normal children who were studied in a general kindergarten.. For this purpose, three following research questions were established: 1. What differences are there in the self-concept between gifted children and normal children? 2. What differences are there in the social-emotional development between gifted children and normal children? 3. What differences are there in the moral behavior between gifted children and normal children? The research subjects were 36 gifted children, who were selected as gifted through testing to distinguish the gifted and participate in the gifted education program in I Institute for Gifted Education and 36 normal children, who were selected randomly from an ordinary kindergarten. To research the affective characteristics of gifted children and normal children, were chosen self-concept, social-emotional development and moral behavior as the subordinate factors of the affective characteristics and compared differences of the average by conducting each test with independent-sample t-test. The testing tools tested the self-concept of children, the evaluation tool for language, cognition, social-emotional development and the test paper of moral behavior. The self-concept test was conducted by one-on-one interviews with subject children. Also the evaluation tool for language, cognition, social-emotional development and the test paper of moral behavior were made out by the teachers who educate gifted children and normal children in each institution. The results of the study were summarized as follows: First, it was shown that the self-concept of gifted children is higher than that of normal children. In subordinate factors, there are signifigant differences in language, mathematics, and normal self. In contrast, there were no important differences in physical ability and relationship with friends and parents. It was analyzed that this was supported by the cognitive developmental qualities such as rapid language development, the ability to problem solve, high comprehensive faculty and thinking power, which was shown in gifted children. Second, social-emotional development of gifted children had a higher average than normal children did in this research but this gap is not meaningful. Though gifted children have the characteristics to adapt themselves to their new environment quickly with their high ability to problem solve and to get along easily with the group on a higher level than themselves, the evaluation should be conducted through observation in more diverse situations because the measuring social-emotional development of children is remarkably difficult. Finally, it was discovered that gifted children achieved a higher score in the moral behavior than normal children did. This shows that gifted children have a high capability to understand others positions, compared with normal children. After all the results of this study, we know that self-concept and moral behavior of gifted children, among the affective characteristics, are significantly higher than those of normal children. The result of this study is expected to be applied appropriately to the field of education for gifted children.
