The dried root of Scutellaria baicalensis(Labiatae) has been used for treatment of some types of dermatitis, diarrhea and various inflammatory diseases. Several phenolic compounds, including flavonoids and benzonoids, have been reported from this plant. This study was conducted to isolate the major components from the roots of Scutellaria baicalensis.
Repeated chromatographic isolation of CH2Cl2, EtOAC and n-BuOH soluble fractions followed by phisico-chemical analysis of isolated compounds gave following conclusions.
1. In our studies on the roots of Scutellaria baicalensis, we isolated thirteen flavonoids and two phenolic compounds. Their structures were elucidated by the basis of spectroscopic analyses. Phenolic compounds were well-known guaiacol and paeonol. Flavonoid compounds were oroxylin A, chrysin, tenaxin Ⅰ, skullcapflavone Ⅱ, rivularin, wogonin, baicalein, viscidulin Ⅱ, 5,7,2'-trihydroxy-8,6'-dimethoxyflavone, baicalin, wogonoside, 6''-ethyl- wogonoside, viscidulinⅢ-2'-O-glucoside.
2. 6''-ethyl-wogonoside was isolated for the first time from the natural product by this study.
