This study was designed to identify and analyze the attentional bias of social phobia group using dot-probe tasks. It differed from precedent studies in that the participants were asked to carry out four different versions of dot-probe tasks which varied in types and durations of stimuli; the variations were words and faces in types, 80ms and 500ms in durations, respectively. This will identify which types and how long of stimuli provided for the participants affect attentional bias of the social phobia group.
Groups of undergraduate students of K university and C university of Seoul area were selected for the implementation of this study. Among the participants were 13 students who were taking psychology classes, specifically diagnosed with social phobia due to a heavy degree of discomfort in social settings and 20 students as a low social anxiety group.
The result indicated that there was more remarkable difference in occurrence of attentional bias between the people with social phobia and the opposite, when 500ms-long stimuli were provided than 80ms, face stimuli, known as more direct social threatening cues, than word stimuli. A significant difference between two groups was exhibited when 500ms-long face stimuli were offered; the social phobia group showed attentional avoidance towards positive faces while the low social anxiety group was biased. The observation of this study, that is, attentional avoidance towards positive faces, was particular compared to attentional bias towards threatening faces commonly detected in international studies, also targeting social phobia groups using dot-probe tasks. This dissimilarity supports suggestions of certain groups of researchers: the effect of characteristic traits in attentional bias.
Such implications made out of this research as well as directions for further studies were discussed.
