The purpose of this study was to provide basic quantitative data relating to the repair and reinforcement of beam-column joints and columns, which are the most important structural components in an earthquake. We investigated
the extent to which using fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) sheets and buckling-restrained braces (BRBs) as repair and reinforcement methods enhanced member performance. In addition, an analytical model was
developed to verify the reliability of the test results by comparing them with the calculated results. This method will furnish valuable data for developing an analytical model for the assessment of seismic performance.
Six specimens with varying combinations of FRP and/or BRB reinforcements were created to test the performances of beam-column connections under cyclic lateral loading. The nonlinear analysis program PERFORM3D was used
for the analysis, applying hysteretic models for concrete and steel. The test results and calculated results were found to correspond relatively well. In both cases, the specimen reinforced with both FRP sheets and a BRB
proved to be the most outstanding in terms of stiffness, maximum load, and ductility. These findings can be used to conduct analytical advanced performance assessments which will help to enhance economic efficiency, in terms of both time and material use, in the reinforcement of existing structures.
