The purpose of this study was to construct a program for the improvement of young children's resilience using picture books and to examine its effects. Toward achieving the goal of this research, the following study questions were raised:
First, how should the resilience improving program for using picture books with young children be constructed? Second, what are the application effects of the resilience improving program using picture books with young children?
The design and construction of this program consisted of four phases and was processed step by step : (1) determining the necessity of program development, (2) devising a tentative plan, (3) consultation of experts, and (4) construction. In the first phase, the need for developing a program was confirmed through social needs analysis and a review of the professional literature. In the second phase, the purpose and goal, content elements, teaching-learning method, and evaluation method of the program were selected on the basis of the literature review. In the third phase, validity of tentative plan contents and relevance of field application were reviewed. Finally, in the forth phase, the substance of program was formed through the creation concrete activities and development of teaching materials. Through theses phases, the resilience improving program using picture books with young children was constructed. The purpose of this program was to help young children overcome stressful situation and achieve growth. Its contents were composed of the following three fields: 'attachment,' 'initiative,' and 'self-control,' all of which are widely considered to be resilience components for young child. Furthermore, these three fields included a total 14 sub-content elements. The teaching- learning for this program was processed in two ways: the young children's program using picture books as its main medium, and mother education with a group counseling format. The program employed a variety of teaching strategies such as a discussion, problem-solving, self expression, lecture, workshops, and visual and auditory materials. Through formative evaluation of each individual session and overall evaluation performed before and after its applying, this program was thoroughly assessed. In order to observe and measure the effects of the resilience improving program using picture books with young children, the program was administered for 12 weeks from December, 2008 to February, 2009. The subjects of this study were 37 4-year-old children (18 in experimental group, 19 in comparative group) and their mothers, who were selected from three child care centers located in Nowon-Gu, Seoul. The program was carried out with the experimental group children twice a week (60 minutes each; total 24 times) and their mothers once a week(90 minutes each; total 12 times). The comparative group was not exposed to the program in any degree. To examine the effects of the program, a resilience assessment for young children as well as mother's parenting stress test were executed for the experimental and comparative groups, and the mother-child interactive behavior rating test was carried out only with the experimental group in the same way before and after the application of the program. Collected data was statistically analyzed by covariance analysis(ANCOVA) for both the resilience assessment and mother's parenting stress test, and by paired samples t-test for the mother-child interactive behavior rating test with SPSS 15.0 for Windows.
The effects of the program obtained from this procedure are summarized as follows : First, it was shown that the resilience improving program using picture books with young children was effective at improving young children's resilience. According to the results, the experimental and comparative groups exhibited a statistically significant difference in their total scores of resilience (F=16.16, p<.001). The same was true for all other fields, including 'attachment'(F=12.00, p<.01), 'initiative'(F=4.58, p<.05), and 'self- control'(F=6.56, p<.05). Second, it was shown that the resilience improving program using picture books with young children had a dramatic effect upon relieving mother's parenting stress experienced by mothers. According to the test results, there were significant statistical differences between the experimental and comparative groups in all domains : the total parenting stress(F=16.65, p<.001), the parent domain(F=9.77, p<.001), and the child domain(F=24.37, p<.001). Based on the examination of results in sub-elements of the parent domain, this study found that the experimental and compatative groups showed statistically significant differences in mothers' 'depression'(F=5.52, p<.05), 'social isolation'(F=5.49, p<.05), and 'parental health'(F=5.31, p<.05). However, the experimental group earned a lower score than the comparative group in 'restriction of role' and 'relationship with spouse'; these were not statistically significant differences. Meanwhile, group differences by sub-elements of the child domain were all statistically significant results(reinforces parent: F=4.26, p<.05, adaptability: F=12.40, p<.01, hyperactivity/distractibility: F=4.80, p<.05, demandingness: F=13.61, p<.01). Third, it was shown that the application of the resilience improving program using picture books with young children brought about a positive change in interactive behavior between the mothers and their young children in the experimental group. According to the result of comparing the pretest and posttest of mothers' interactive behavior, it showed statistically significant difference in the 'responsive behavior'(t=7.04, p<.001) and 'efficient behavior' (t=6.50, p<.001). But 'directive behavior' was exception. In addition, based on the comparison of the pretest and posttest of children's interactive behavior, this study found that there existed statistically significant differences in both 'active behavior'(t=8.45, p<.001) and 'social behavior'(t=7.94, p<.001) factors.
