Low temperature diesel combustion in a direct injection diesel engine is able to limit combustion temperatures to level at which nitrogen oxides and particulate matter formation rates are low. Most of the low temperature diesel combustion system is adopted high rates of exhaust gas recirculation to make dilution effect on the intake charge. Diluting the intake charge lowers the flame temperature T due to increased heat capacity associated with the inert gases so that it offers the potential of avoiding both particulate matter and nitrogen oxides formation. However, engine operating range is limited and hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide emissions are increased as the combustion temperature is decreased because of incomplete combustion and lack of oxidation reaction. In this study, supercharging system was adopted to investigate the influence of boost pressure on operating range and exhaust emissions by using a supercharger at low temperature diesel combustion condition in a 5-cylinder 2.7 L direct injection diesel engine. The experimental parameters such as injection quantity, injection timing, injection pressure and exhaust gas recirculation rate were varied to find maximum operating range in low temperature diesel combustion condition. The result showed that operating torque range with boost was expanded up to 41.9% compared to naturally aspirated low temperature diesel combustion condition due to increased mixing intensity. Increasing boost pressure relatively allowed lower emission of hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide emissions due to increased swirl rate and mixing intensity which could well-oxidize hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide emissions in cylinder. The boosted low temperature diesel combustion engine showed that particulate matter emission was dramatically reduced under all operating range compared with the particulate matter emission of conventional high speed direct injection(HSDI) diesel engine operation. Finally, this study presents the boosted low temperature diesel combustion map of emission and the strategy of improved engine operating range.
