This thesis is a study of the Piano Sonata in E Major, Op. 109, one of the sonatas composed by Ludwig van Beethoven(1770-1827) in his late age exploring the unique compositional innovations and romantic traits that have influenced the next generation of composers. Beethoven was one of the greatest composers who mastered the Classicism based on the 18th century classical style of Franz Joseph Haydn(1732-1791) and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart(1756-1791) and played a pioneer role in the 19th century Romanticism. Especially, his late compositions, as transient ones to the Romanticism, have a great significance and Op. 109 represents the characteristics of his late style. This sonata consists of three movements and Beethoven used a variation form in the finale for the first time. In addition, a fugue technique was used, the theme of its first movement dominates the whole piece so that it shows an organic unity, and more daring harmony, radical modulation, fantasy-like elements and pursuing new sonority all belong to the characteristic elements of a new romantic era. This thesis briefly traces the life of Beethoven, his representative compositions and compositions for solo piano. The piano sonatas, categorized into three stylistic periods, are surveyed. Finally, this study analyzes the theme, rhythm, harmony and the formal structure of Op. 109 to examine the late work of Beethoven who brought freedom and a new romantic vitality to the genre of sonata.
