Although the interdependent relationship among the Northeast Asian countries has been enhanced obviously in the trend of globalization, those countries are facing environmental problems, because their environmental link is closely related based on the geographical characteristics of the region. In other words, the geographical proximity not only provides a good space for economic development, but also causes common environ mental problems, which makes the countries in the region inevitable to cooperate with each other. Therefore, this study starts with the analysis of the current situation of marine pollution in the Yellow Sea to present policy alternatives for promoting cooperation in the Yellow Sea environmental sphere. To improve and preserve the environmental conditions of the Yellow Sea, it is imperative to form an international regime among the three countries of the region, North and South Korea and China, which are lo cated around the Yellow Sea. In order to motivate China to participate in the process of environmen tal cooperation, and to eventually form a regime in the region, South Korea should initiate an active cooperation plan for the Bohai Bay. This initiative role of South Korea is necessary to draw China into cooperative relations with its neighbors since the environmental pollution of the Bohai Bay has been rapidly underway in recent times and about which the Chinese central and provincial governments are worried. For this purpose, the Bohai Cooperation Project, the Inter-Cities Coope ration Meeting, the Environment Development Cooperation Meeting, and the Knowledge-Building and Cognitive Meeting are needed to be establi shed institutionally. This study consists of six chapters and its main logic and the scope of its framework are as follows; The first chapter shows the objectives and scope, and methodology of the study, which prescribe the contents of the following chapters. The second chapter looks into the theoretical background related to the topic of this study, and analyzes in detail the Mediterranean regime and the Baltic regime, as the successful cases of marine environmental regi me, by game theory. The third chapter examines the geographical characteristics, the present condition of marine pollution and the main reason for the pollution of the Yellow Sea by the use of geopolitical theory. The fourth chapter is to investigate the marine policies of the coun tries in the Yellow Sea sphere and their efforts for environmental coope ration at the bilateral and multilateral level. The fifth chapter is to find policy alternatives for promoting environ mental cooperation in the Yellow Sea by considering the limits and pro blems of bilateral and multilateral cooperation.
