The present study is aimed at investigating actual situation about reproduction of dental prosthesis as it forces patients to revisit the clinic and is associated with increased cost for such travel, decreased satisfaction with dental service, and economic loss of dentists as well as dental laboratories including cost of their working force and time. In an effort to gather fundamental data for reproduction of dental prosthesis, a survey was conducted by means of questionnaires in this study. Among the methods used for exchanging opinions between dentists and dental technicians, 'exchange of opinions between dentists and staff members by telephone, etc. at any time' was found to be the most frequently used method, followed by 'use mainly of written request for making prosthesis' and 'receipt of request for making prosthesis from dentists after direct and indirect examination of patient's condition' in order. The relation between the numbers of dental prosthesis produced and reproduced by each area proved to be negatively correlated, showing that the number of prosthesis reproduced decreases significantly as the number of prosthesis produced initially increases. The area of 'orthodontia for young children' was ranked first with 9.2% in the average monthly rate of reproduction by a dental laboratory of prosthesis, followed by 8.7% each of the areas 'removable denture' and 'implant', respectively, and 7.6% of the area 'for beautification'. 'Deformation of impression and material' turned out to be the biggest cause of reproduction with 94.9%, followed by 69.4% of 'incorrect information provided by dentists' and 64.3% of 'problems during production by dental technicians', all featuring no less seriousness. Malocclusion topped the causes for reproduction in the area of inlay and crown with 33.9% while mal-alignment of margin showed relatively higher rate of 32.2%. Incongruity of teeth was rated as the top cause for reproduction in the area of 'orthodontia for young children', poor support or maintenance topped in the area of removable denture with 60.0%, incongruity in the area of implant with 44.3% and poor color in the area of 'beautification' with 55.6%, respectively. 'Smooth communication between dentists and dental technicians' was suggested to be the first measure to consider to decrease reproduction with 60.2%, implying the lack of such communication in fact, followed by 'proper period for production of dental prosthesis' with 31.3% as the second and 'problems of dental technicians' with 33.4% as the third. As the cause for reproduction of dental prosthesis by area, 'incorrect information provided by dentists' was found to feature the highest ratio of reproduction, followed by 'deformation of patients' oral cavity'. As stated above, patients should be provided with exact information based on smooth communication among dental personnel in order to decrease reproduction of dental prosthesis, which may eventually lead to satisfaction of patients with medical treatment.
