The main objective of this study is to investigate how the Adapted physical education programs have effects on the motor skills of mentally retarded children. To conduct this investigation, 14 study subjects were selected from mentally retarded children who were joining adapted physical education programs in D child development center in seoul. All of the subjects were aged between 6 and 9 among the 14 study subjects, 7 children were assigned into the experimental group, and the rest 7 into the control group. The experimental group was asked to participate in the adapted physical education programs 40 minutes a day, 3 times a week for 10 days. The children in control group did not join the program at all. Collected data were analyzed by Ulrich’s TGMD-2(Test of Gross Motor Development) method, paired with t-test and paired-test. The results are as follows. Firstly, after joining the adapted physical education program, the experimental group members shows improved muscle exercise abilities compared to the control group. Secondly, after joining the adapted physical education program, the experimental group members showed improved power compared to the control group. Lastly, after the joining the special physical education program, the experimental group members showed coordination compared to the control group. In spite of the fact that the experimental group members participated in this program only for 10 weeks, namely 40 times in total, the difference between the experimental group and the control group drew a meaningful comparison. Therefore, the continuous participation in this program is sure to bring significant improvement of motor skills in mentally retarded children. As a result, this study proved that Adapted physical education programs had positive effects for mentally retarded children, and thereby emphasizing its need for them. Moreover, it also provides possibilities that adapted physical education programs may have the potential for other children with growth disabilities, the elderly who have weakened motor skills, or other disabled adults who are in need.
