This study looked into the consumers' satisfaction, and the kind and element of their favored patterns, colors and color combinations of the fabrics designs for patient's uniforms currently in use at general hospitals, private clinics, or general nursing establishments in Korea, and on the basis of the findings developed the fabrics designs for patient's uniforms which will be more effective for the psychological or physical treatments of patients. For the evaluation of the satisfaction and preference for colors, color combinations and patterns of fabrics designs of current patient's uniforms, and also for the evaluation of the draft fabrics designs, the data collection was conducted through survey researches by using the stimulants and questionnaire with the subjects of patients, healthcare personnel, and general public at eight general hospitals and private clinics located in Seoul and Gyeonggi regions. A total of 392 copies of questionnaire was used for the data analysis, and the necessity was confirmed to exist for the improvement of fabrics designs for patient's uniforms. According to the findings on the preference for the colors, color combinations and patterns for the establishment of improvement directions, the preference for the base color was high in the order of light pink(18.9%), light green(16.1%) and light blue(15.8%), and that for the pattern color was high in the order of orange(16.1%), green(12.5%), purplish blue(12%) and pink(12%). The preference for the combination of base colors and pattern colors was high in the order of a purplish blue pattern on a blue base(23.2%), a green pattern on a pink base(16.1%), and a green pattern on a light green base(15.8%) and, as for the preference factor, 'warm feeling' was most favored in all of the base color(47.8%), the pattern color(37.0%), and the color combination(36.5%). Regarding the preference for the size and kind of patterns, the middle size was most favored(71.2%) and the preference for the kind was high in the order of geometric patterns(25.8%), plant/fruit patterns(23.2%), and mixed patterns(20.2%). Based on the above results of the preference survey and those of existing studies, the development directions were set up for the fabrics designs for patient's uniforms, which responded to the requisites in line with color therapy effects, and the draft uniforms were developed according to the directions. Three draft uniforms were finally presented for women and both sexes through the consumers' preference evaluation. The contents of the draft uniforms are as follows. The draft uniform 1, with a design for both sexes, was selected to carry the major color in the light green line of pale tone with high luminosity/low chroma, the first subsidiary color in the green line of vivid tone with mid luminosity/high chroma, and the second subsidiary color of white color of N9.5, and the emphasizing color in the orange line of vivid tone with mid luminosity/high chroma. The pattern used the English letter S in a white curved line with a clean image, extended the horizontal side of the English letter H in a green straight line, and included an orange mark implying a cross, a symbol for a medical institution. The hospital logo, with a feeling of a line, was combined with the mark, patterned into a geometric image, and arranged in 40% drop repeat, thus carrying the feelings of a straight line, a curved line, and a horizontal and vertical rhythm. The draft uniform 2, with a design for both sexes, was selected to carry the major color in the blue line of pale tone with high luminosity/low chroma, the first supporting color in the dark blue line of vivid tone with mid luminosity/high chroma, the second supporting color of white of N9.5, the first emphasizing color in the blue line with mid luminosity/high chroma, and the second emphasizing color in the purplish red line of vivid tone with mid luminosity/high chroma. The pattern was arranged irregularly with the diagonal lines, crossing free lines of several layer, overlapped with circles, with the soft images of geometry. The uniform presented a clean feeling, being separated from the major color by the white lines around the patterns. The draft uniform 3, with a design for women, was selected to carry the major color in the pink line of pale tone with high luminosity/low chroma, the subsidiary color in the pink line of bright tone with mid luminosity/high chroma, and the emphasizing color in the green line of strong tone with mid luminosity/high chroma. As for the pattern, the combination of a mark with a soft plant image of the cursive English capital letters E and H in the ornate writing style and the hospital logo in the Korean writing style, was arranged in the horizontal and diagonal lines. The blank space was arranged with a shape of dots in the major color of the reduced luminosity, and a mark in the emphasizing color of green, the opposite color, providing the senses of a change and a rhythm. For the evaluation of the consumer's preference for the draft uniforms, the six uniforms were selected, which were the three proposed ones and the other three products among ready-made patient's uniforms with the colors, color combinations and patterns similar to the study findings, and they were evaluated along the Likert 5-point scale. The evaluation results confirmed the improvement in the colors, patterns and color combinations of fabrics materials, with the higher preference for the draft uniforms 1, 2, and 3 over the existing fabrics materials. The studies about colors and patterns have been conducted only for the sensibility and pattern preference with a few single colors even in the field of fabrics designs for general clothing. So the studies, including the color combination and pattern development, are very insufficient. The study findings is considered to contribute to the continued development of patient's uniforms with various colors and patterns by professional manufacturers, and also to the enhancement of interest in patient's uniforms, which will assist disease treatment, through the harmony of functional elements and esthetic elements at the medical institutions where the considerations for the economy and convenience easily cause the patients' physical and psychological aspects neglected. The study has the limits, including the restrictions of the subjects to those in Gyeonggi-do and Seoul and the imbalance in questionnaire respondents and their age distribution. Thus, the comparative study by the age and with other regions is suggested for further study issues.
