The WC/Co hard alloys produced by sintering have been mainly utilized in cutting/drilling tool and die materials for a long time. The main component in this material is the tungsten carbide, and the cobalt serves as a binder which is added by 8~13 wt%. This material has a high hardness number (HRA 83~93), excellent wear and corrosion resistance. On the other hand, more than 700 tons of WC/Co hard alloy scrap are being generated every year in Korea, and most of the scrap are not recycled. The price of tungsten (W) which is one of main component in this material went up from $ 66.5 (2004) to $ 241 (2007) per MTU. This rare metal (or its carbide) is indispensable for development of advanced industries, and Korea depends mostly on the import from abroad. Hence, it is very important to recycle the WC/Co hard alloy scrap not only in economic reason and but also environmental aspect. In the present work, the process was developed to recover the WC powder from the sludge generated in manufacturing process of hard alloy tools, and to reproduce the WC/Co hard alloy using the recycled powder. New process is composed of the oxidation and carbothermal reduction. The oxide powder was prepared by the oxidation of sludge at over 700 oC, resulting in the mixture of WO3 and CoWO4. The phase of oxides were confirmed from the XRD and EDS analyses. This oxide powder was mixed with carbon black for 24 hours, and then the mixture was carbothermally reduced under the flow of argon gas at 800 ~ 1000 oC. It is confirmed that the oxide powder was fully transformed to a mixture of tungsten carbide and cobalt at 1000 oC by solid carbon under a stream of argon. The process of oxidation of WC/Co powder will be discussed precisely as well as the reduction by solid carbon. After reduction, carbon removal with tetrabromoethane solution is necessary to make a button for sintering. In addition, the evaluation of morphology and mechanical properties will be made for the reclaimed WC/Co hard alloy.
