The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of storytelling instruction through the application of activities that correspond to elementary school students' needs, and to propose a method of teaching that will ultimately lead to the improvement of students' speaking skill, confidence, and satisfaction. The subjects of this study are two classes, one experimental and the other control class of 5th graders at P Elementary School in Daegu. A questionnaire that includes the students' preferences about storytelling and what type of activities they would want to do following listening to the stories was conducted. The survey revealed that most of the students wanted to have storytelling instruction that includes 5 types of activities including word games, chants, role-playing, making and solving quizzes, and creating their own endings to the stories. A new teaching model of storytelling instruction was applied to the experimental class, and a model based on the 7th Korean national elementary English curriculum was applied to the control class. The experimental class had 5 lessons of 4 periods, which totaled 20 periods over a span of 10 weeks. The first period is for listening comprehension, the second is for practicing useful expressions, and the third is concerned with reading and writing. The fourth is for the implementation of the activities stage where students strengthen their practical speaking skills with activities they like. In that step, students use the materials learned in previous steps. The results of this study were as follows: First, the storytelling instruction from the new teaching model had a positive effect on students' English speaking skill. It especially affected the high level students and middle level students. Second, a questionnaire about the experimental class's satisfaction with the learning method was given. The result showed that most of the students were satisfied with the storytelling instruction through the application of activities that corresponded to their needs. It substantially affected the high level students who had good attitudes in accepting a new learning method more than the students in the other levels. Third, the storytelling instruction by a new teaching model had a positive effect on students' improvement in confidence. It didn't show a positive effect on the high level students. However, it showed middle and low level students improved their confidence. This was because the new teaching model didn't affect the high level students who had already built confidence in learning English. The middle and low level students showed a more significant improvement of confidence by strengthening their practical speaking skills with the activities they like. Fourth, the results from the thoughts of the experimental class on storytelling instruction, which include the application of activities that students like, were analyzed and they proved to be beneficial. The high level students knew the advantages and disadvantages very well and mentioned what will be needed to improve the effects of storytelling instruction. However the students in the other levels mentioned that they had difficulties in the writing activities and making quizzes because of a shortage of time. Based upon the thoughts of high level students it is recommended to adjust the lesson plan to better address the gap in learning levels within a class. Teachers should find the root cause of a student's motivation or lack thereof. Once this is done the teacher will be able to structure a class that can satisfy many levels of students at once. Fifth, the analysis of the teacher's class diary showed that the teacher did her best for improving student's interests, providing students with more opportunities to speak English, and improving students' confidence. The storytelling instruction through the application of activities that students liked was more effective in increasing the student's interest and confidence. Considering the results of this study, the storytelling instruction through the application of activities that correspond to the elementary school students' needs can improve their satisfaction and confidence by strengthening their practical speaking skills because they are doing activities they like. In that respect, this new teaching model that incorporates storytelling will contribute to increasing elementary school students' English speaking skill as a practical teaching method.
