Although the previous studies of high capacity anode materials for Li-ion secondary batteries have focused on increasing amount of LI-ion intercalated, the study of high power anode materials emphasises the intercalation/deintercalation rate of Li-ion in anode material structure. When the expanded graphite having wider layer distance was applied to the anode materials for Li-ion secondary batteries, it was assumed that the intercalation/deintercalation of Li-ion could be done with ease as compared with the case of graphite.
In this study, the natural graphite with well developed lamella structure was used to make the expanded graphite and the expanded graphite were prepared by using ammonium peroxodisulfate as an oxidizing agent and a high purity of sulfuric acid as intercalate. As the process variables, the amount of oxidizing agent, the acid treatment time, the heat treatment temperature and time were changed to find out the optimum manufacturing conditions of expanded graphite as the anode materials for Li-ion batteries.
With increasing the amount of oxidizing agent, the charge/discharge characteristics of expanded graphite increased up to 8 wt.% and then it decreased with the further the increase. The analysis of SEM, XRD and Raman revealed that the layer structure of graphite was expanded uniformly allowing the easier intercalation/deintercalation of Li-ion until 8 wt.% of oxidizing agent. However the expanded graphite with the oxidizing agent treatment over 10 wt.% content showed that the distance of graphite layer excessively widened differentiating from those with the lower oxidizing agent treatments.
When the intercalated samples were heat treated in the range of 800~1200℃ under nitrogen atmosphere, the charge/discharge characteristics was increased until 1000℃, but it was largely decreased with the heat treatment at 1200℃. In this high temperature treatment, the XRD result showed the deteriorated crystallinity. It was speculated that Li-ion intercalation/deintercalation could be inappropriate with the samples heat-treated at 1200℃.
When the graphite samples were acid treated during 30~120 min, the charge/discharge characteristics was decreased with the increased acid treatment time. With the increased heat treatment time, the charge/discharge characteristics was improved. Comparing to the both results, it was confirmed that the sulfur content remaining in the graphite influenced on the behavior of Li-ion movement. The charge/discharge characteristic was improved with the decreased sulfur content.
After checking the electronic chemical analysis at the different preparing conditions, the optimal conditions were selected as the oxidizing agent of 8 wt.%, with 30 min's treatment and further heat treatment at 1000℃ for 120 min. The sample(A8-t30 T1000-t120) showed the improved charge/discharge characteristics such as 404.3 mAh/g of initial reversible capacity, 90.8 % of discharge rate capability at 10 C-rate, and 38.0 mAh/g of charge capacity at 10 C-rate. However, this expanded graphite still had potential plateaus and showed the decreased initial efficiency(53.7 %) as compared with the natural graphite(71.8 %).
In order to solve the problems of potential plateaus and low initial efficiency, the expanded graphite was composited with the petroleum pitch. The composites were prepared by mixing the expanded graphite with 10 wt.% of oxidization agent and petroleum pitch at the ratio of 1:2. They showed the improved initial efficiency(77.8%) and the definitely decreased potential plateaus maintaining 389 mAh/g of initial reversible capacity. Thus, it was confirmed that expanded graphite had the possibly of application as high power anode materials.
